~ ☼ When it came to eggs, Onyx liked to consider herself something of an expert on them. After taking countless numbers of them from various species of birds, she had gotten pretty good at figuring out just which eggs came from what bird. There were a lot of different things that set them apart, some looked different, like robin eggs, which were that weird shade of blue, some tasted a little different than others, some were big, some were small, and some were really, really similar to other ones, but for the most part, she was good at telling them all apart. It had been a while since she had found an egg that she didn't recognize, or at least have some semblance of an idea as to what bird it came from, which was why she wanted, no, needed to know where these came from!
Staring down at the trio of eggs at her paws, laid out on the sands of the camp, she had to admit that they might just be the biggest eggs she had ever seen. Each egg was individually about the same size as an average bird, so that left a massive amount of choices completely inviable. For a moment she had wondered if these were the eggs of some kind of weird reptile, but reptile eggs were all soft and weird, not hard shelled like this. The weirdest part of it all though was that these eggs hadn't even been in a tree, the nest had been on the ground! It was well hidden, sure, in fact she had almost completely missed the thing due to paying attention to the trees more than the ground for nests, but still, what kind of bird put their nest on the ground?!
Well...in the end, it didn't matter if they were big if they tasted bad, and while she had yet to find an egg that she actually didn't like, these eggs seemed too good to be true. "Well...one way to find out!" With that, a paw reached down to scoop up one of the eggs, her digits just barely tapping the surface of the shell and-CRACK "...huh?" Pulling back her paw, her crimson eyes focused on the large crack the suddenly split the egg, carving a path straight across its center. It...it made no sense, she had hardly even touched the thing and it just suddenly split! The look of confusion on the hybrids face only continued to grow as another, softer crack resounded from the egg, the split only widening, and...was...was that chirping? It was chirping, the egg was definitely chirping now.
It was hatching, the biggest egg she had ever seen and it decided to hatch right when she was about to eat it, this...this was the worst! "AHHHH, you, you stupid....WHY?!" This was so unfair, a new kind of egg she had never even seen before, and she didn't even get to try it, all because whatever dumb bird was in there just decided it wanted hatch! Directing a hate filled glare at the white orb, she watched as it finally split in half and some...thing came fumbling out of it. It had wet, off-yellow...fur? Was that fur? Where were the feathers, birds had feathers right? She had never actually seen a baby bird up close, if there was noise coming from a nest that just meant it didn't have any eggs after all, but...this, this was what a young bird looked like? Whatever kind of bird this was, it was big, almost as big as most of the other birds she knew already, and....and she had an idea.
A smile suddenly lit the discens face, as she gazed down at the little thing before her as it laid there, staring up at her with those beady black eyes. Whatever this thing was, it laid huge eggs, absolutely gigantic compared to other birds, and it laid them right on the ground, where they were so much easier to get to. So...when these ones were fully grown...they'd lay those eggs too, right? This...this was an amazing plan, surely, this must have been what genius looked like! She could raise these weird birds, and then they would lay eggs for her, and she could maybe eat one or two and let the rest hatch into more birds, giving her more eggs! A laugh erupted from Onyx, one that could have been called diabolical, if not for the chick sat on the sand next to her, happily chirping at her
