[font=trebuchet ms]"That is Carina- part of the Argo Navis, named for the Argo from Greek mythology."

Rin held the arrow aloft with her telekinesis, its tip pointing to the constellation and tracing it out. "You can recognize it by that star right there- Canopus, the second-brightest star in the night sky- then it follows a sort of dipper shape like this." Hopefully it was more clear to them than it was to her. Turning her head to glance at the others who were gathered, she continued, "The Argo Navis actually has three constellations, all of which are supposed to be part of the 'ship.' Carina is the keel."

Tugging at her scarf, she nodded. "According to myth, an old king sent the Argo's crew out to fetch a magical piece of golden fleece, hoping that the quest would get them killed. Inexplicably, Hera decided to help them out, and they successfully retrieved the fleece and brought it back." That was a significantly condensed retelling, but she was trying to stay laconic.

With a shrug, she added, "Of course, this myth is just that: a myth. The gods would never be so helpful, among other things." Pointing her arrow to the stars in decreasing order of brightness, she went on, "Each constellation really is just... stars. Beta, Epsilon, Theta, Eta Carinae- actually, Eta Carinae was the brightest star in the night sky for a bit, tied with Sirius, while it was experiencing outbursts. One of those outbursts created an entire nebula- the Homunculus Nebula." She traced the clouds of stardust with her arrow.

Twitching her ears, she commented, "As far as some people are concerned, all of that is boring, and it's much more fun to come up with some story about gods and mortals. But frankly, I've had enough of gods for several lifetimes. Nature is much more interesting."

Turning back to the others, Rin put her arrow back in her quiver. "But I know that's not all of you, so let's make a game out of this. One of you picks a constellation, or really, any series of stars that you think looks interesting; then the next one to reply has to tell a story about that group of stars." Shrugging, she added with a half-smile, "It doesn't have to be true. Just make it interesting." Looking over the crowd, she went on, "Once you've told your story, then you pick a constellation for the next person, and so on and so forth."

Walking over to the side of the dock and sitting down, she looked back up at the sky. "Best storyteller gets bragging rights." Well, maybe there'd be a prize, but she wasn't sure what they'd want. Maybe she could figure that out later.

Pointing up at a cluster of stars, she said, "I'll start. First volunteer, tell us a story about Orion." As for which stars were a part of Orion... if they didn't know, they could make it up. It was all bunk anyway.

THERE IS NO LIFE, THERE IS NO SPARK !
CAESAR CIPHER. MALE. NO GROUP. NO RANK.
This was all idiotic in Caesar's mind. He mindlessly joined the crowd as Warringkingdoms started her tirade about the night sky, his tail flicking idly. He watched as she pointed out the constellations, rambling about gods and myths. Idiotic. But at least Rin didn't appear to believe in the stories she told, that was a bit reassuring. Although the sky looked pretty, Caesar wasn't much of an astronomer as his sister, Atbash, was. She would talk about the different stars and planets all night. He mused to himself, though fought it back immediately. You don't care for this. Even if he knew what constellation and stars Rin talked about, he wasn't that good of a storyteller. Not to mention he didn't really want to let others know of his knowledge about space; it was needless information.

2D had never really been much of an academic type. Even in the days before numerous head injuries and not so helpful addictions, the serval had never been the one at the head of the pack when it came to brains. He still struggled quite a bit with trying to read, and remembering most of the things that were taught to him that weren't hunting or basic survival was now very difficult. He often felt terrible about the things that he ended up forgetting, but he supposed that it was just sort of a fact of his life now. Needless to say, however, 2D had never learned about the stars or the constellations – or if he had, the singer could no longer remember even a speck of the information he had been given. As a result of this, when he ended up taking a seat beside Caesar for this particular event, he found himself utterly fascinated by what Rin was going to speak about. Compared to the deadpan, bored, and almost emotionless expression that existed on the yellow feline'a face, 2D had practically all of his amazed emotions written right on his face. His pure black eyes were wide with amazement, and he even clapped his paws together a bit when Rin reached the end of her story.

When Rin introduced the notion of the storytelling, the lanky feline found himself utterly fascinated. After all, he had done songwriting with Murdoc in the past, and songwriting was a bit like storytelling, right? You were just telling your stories in a different form. Hopefully, he would be able to tell a story in a more straightforward way, without the use of music. Raising one of his dark paws up in the air, the serval said eagerly, "Oh, me! I c'n tell a story!" He knew absolutely nothing about the actual story of Orion, but he figured he could come up with something entertaining enough. After all, all of the stories of the stars had just been made up at some point, right? With newfound confidence, 2D began his tale proudly, "Orion is an, uh... a livin' plant. Oh, well, I s'pose all plants're livin', but Orion is a special one! Was a special one. 'Cause he can talk, 'n" interact with folks! When he wuz first grown, Orion was awful lonely, since nobody ever came up t'talk t'im. But fen one day an adventurer came up 'n' discovered 'im, and soon people from all over were comin' t'see fis talkin' plant! But eventually the popularity came t'be too much, and Orion ended up gettin' so trampled he passed on. Th'people who trampled 'im felt so horrible fat fey decided t'make 'im part of th'stars, where 'e could always be popular, wifout 'avin' t'ever worry about gettin' trampled again." The story wasn't even remotely similar to the actual story behind the Orion constellation, but 2D seemed rather proud of himself, beaming at his captive audience with a broad grin that showed off his missing teeth. Once he was done, he pointed upwards at the stars, saying softly, "Fe next person t'go can tell a story about... uh... Aquila." 2D could remember hearing that name around camp, when others had been speaking about this event ahead of time.

    Tena Moonspinner —
Stars.  Flaming balls of gas that lit up the night sky, thousands of light years away.  The petite sand cat remembered, when she was younger, insisting one day she'd touch them.  And burn to a crisp.  With half her face scarred, perhaps it looked as if she did try to touch them.  Chasing a child's dream.

"Clearly, stargazing has to be your idea for you to show any inclination towards it."  The Demdji thinned her lips, ears flicking backwards.  She half-expected to turn and spot a pair of warm brown eyes following her into the night.  Infuriating brown eyes more like.  Overprotective brown eyes... Kriffing Jedi.

In silence, sky blue hues cast upwards, pointedly away from Warringkingdoms, Tena considered the rules of the game.  Truthfully, she knew little of the traditional stories everyone else knew; little enough it was debatable she'd be able to tell fact from creative fiction.  Her people had their own stories.

After 2D told his tale, she leaned over to a nearby NPC, murmuring a quiet request for direction.  Aquila.  It sounded familiar.  In hushed words, she located the constellation; Aquila the Eagle.  The eagle?  A bird.  A bird... She shuffled, raising her voice softly. "I know it as Tavekriti; the little red bird.  Tavekriti is a reminder, that Ar-Amu shaped in the stars for us."

    Spoiler:
"One day, as Ekkreth was walking along, they found themselves accosted by a little red bird with black wings and grey eyes, which flitted all about their head and refused to be shooed away. Bemused, Ekkreth stopped, and addressed the small creature. “Little one, why do you pester me so? What have I done to earn your ire?” The words felt free and familiar on her tongue.  For it was a story Ebra told her growing up; one of her older brother's favorites.

"“It is nothing you have done,” the bird replied. “But my mate sits injured in our burrow not far ahead, and if you keep to your current course, Trickster, you will surely trod upon the entrance and harm him further.”

“You could have simply asked me to alter my path, then,” Ekkreth said."

“I was afraid you’d laugh, and deliberately stomp as you went, the same as Depur’s servants when they came this way - that was how my mate came to be injured in the first place, and our eggs crushed at the same time.”

Good humor gone, Ekkreth bowed their head. “My sorrow for your loss, little one. Gladly, I will avoid your home, if you would be so kind as to guide me around it.”

The bird settled upon Ekkreth’s shoulder, and soon steered them through the sandy gullies and out the other side without incident. Before leaving, however, the animal took a moment to look Ekkreth in the eye.

“Travel towards the Leaking Cup for two nights and Grandmother’s Hand for a third, and at the base of the leftmost cliff you will find a small spring with clean water and many bugs to eat. Clean your tracks as you go, however, or Depur’s slavers may find and pursue your trail.”
" Tena wondered sometimes, if this was the first Freedom Trail.

"[b]Touched, Ekkreth pulled out their water pouch and an empty nutshell; they poured a few drops and offered the tiny container to the bird, who delicately took it with a claw. “For you and your mate, little friend, along with my thanks.”

They parted there, the bird returning home and Ekkreth journeying north towards the stars called the Leaking Cup. But that was not the end of their story.
    "

A flicker of doubt glinted in her eyes.  This story was going on longer than the others.  But she had their ears and she would not stop until the tale was over.  That would not be right.

"[b]On the second night, Ekkreth saw the glow of firelight ahead, and slowed their steps. When they could hear the sound of raucous, cruel laughter, the Trickster changed their shape to resemble a dune snake, silently slithering across the warm sand to peek over shallow dune.

Several of the servants who caught new slaves for Depur lounged around a wasteful bonfire, helping themselves to food and drink, while a small family with chains around their wrists huddled together nearby. Angry, Ekkreth wound their way around the camp, coming to a stop close to the slaves. A heavy staple pinned their central chain to the bedrock, impossible for hands alone to pry up.

Ekkreth, though, had many tricks besides clever hands.

Before acting, however, they started to sing a soft, crooning lullaby, watching as the slave family heard it and stilled where they sat.

“~Oh Brother, my Brother, the cup that we stole,
It’s leaking, my brother, that cup has a hole~
Place it we must in our grandmother’s hand,
Perhaps she can fix it, with sun-heated sand~
If not then we’ll go to the left of the wall,
And hide the cup there, in a hole so small-”
    "

A song she heard as a kit, more than once.

"“Hey!” One of the slavers shouted. “Shut that singing and go to sleep!”

Ekkreth immediately stopped, though when the man returned to his meal, they could hear at least one of the slaves humming their tune. Satisfied that the instructions had been received, Ekkreth settled in to wait.

Depur’s slavers gradually fell to sleep, their fire dying down to embers. Only a single man remained on guard, facing away from the chained slaves. Ekkreth seized their moment to act and slithered forward into the family’s midst. One small child nearly squeaked, but her mother’s fingers squeezed her own, reassuring.

Oh so slowly, Ekkreth pushed and wiggled their way in-between the staple and the chain, scales as hard as the Great Mother’s bones forcing a gap to form. After Ekkreth passed through completely, they turned around to repeat the action, making their form a bit bigger around. Again and again they slipped between, creating a larger and larger gap, until the staple came free completely.

“Go,” they whispered to the grateful family. “I will make a distraction for you.”

That said, the Trickster slipped away from them, around the far side of the camp and up the side of a dune. They waited until the moonglow illuminated the stretch of sand directly in front of the guard before crossing it. He noticed and froze.  Gleeful, Ekkreth slowly slithered closer, until they came to a stop coiled around the man’s feet. Clearly terrified of potentially being struck by poison fangs, the guard remained stock still for hours, until the moon had set, and the sun’s glow could just be seen in the sky.

It was obvious when the other slavers awoke by their furious shouts.  Ekkreth picked their head up to watch as some ran to the spot the family had been chained, and others hurried to the tops of the dunes around their camp, searching in vain for some sign of where the escapees had fled.  One, though, came towards Ekkreth and their trapped guard - the enraged Taskmaster.

“You!” The woman shouted. “Why did you not wake us when the slaves were escaping?! Face me when I address you, coward!”

Stammering, the guard could do nothing to point downwards, at Ekkreth. The Taskmaster followed his gesture, eyes widening when she finally noticed the massive dune snake. Unlike the petrified guard, however, she was able to act on her fear instead of freezing in place. Drawing forth a knife, the Taskmaster held it up to throw.  Ekkreth took that as their cue to leave.

Fast as lightning, the Trickster launched forward, easily avoiding the blade and curving up the side of a dune. Finally free, the guard they’d held prisoner all night collapsed, tripping up the Taskmaster as she tried to follow Ekkreth.

“Get that snake!” The woman shouted, struggling to get back to her feet. “I want its hide!”

Laughing, Ekkreth hurried onward, wanting to gain a bit more distance before they assumed the shape of the rappali bird and took to the sky-
" Pause.  Dramatic effect.  The same way her brother told it.

"-but the Taskmaster had more than bladed weapons hung from her belt.

A heavy weight suddenly came down overtop of Ekkreth, and they rolled to a startled halt. Thrashing, the Trickster tried to get out from under the thick oilcloth, but a great many bodies piled on, weighing them down. The muffled sound of the Taskmaster’s voice rang out, ordering her underlings to secure the cloth around their prize.

Trapped inside the newly formed bag, Ekkreth struggled as the slavers carried them back to the camp. Before long, they were dropped onto the flat surface of a sled, the bunched folds of the oilcloth secured with more than enough rope to keep the Trickster from finding an opening.

For three days and nights, Ekkreth could do nothing but sit in place, unwilling to reveal their true self until a clear escape route appeared. The guards would laugh as they kicked the bag, discussing how fine the dune snake’s scaly skin would look stretched out upon Depur’s palace wall. Frustrated more than fearful, the Trickster hissed in reply.

Then came the moment when their patience paid off.

Something small landed atop the folds of the bag and began to nudge at the loops of rope holding it shut. Ekkreth awoke from their doze but did not move. More nudges and tugs proceeded to loosen the bindings, just enough that a tiny sliver of an opening appeared. Quickly, Ekkreth took the shape of a kirik fly and buzzed through it.

Their friend, the little red bird, chirped as soon as the Trickster appeared. “I am glad to see you alive, Trickster. The family you sent to my spring were all quite concerned and would not leave off their pestering until I promised to come looking.”

“Then I will forever be in their debt, and yours as well, little friend,” Ekkreth replied. After a moment’s consideration, they changed their shape again, to match the bird before them. “In fact, from now on, when I escape from Depur and his servants’ clutches, I will do so looking like you, Tavekriti - so that all the Great Mother’s Children will know you are a friend and ally.”

Laughing, the two of them took flight together from the sled, the Taskmaster driving it unaware of her prize flitting off into the sky.

True to their word, whenever Ekkreth had reason to live up to their name and go walking in the sky, they did so in the form of a little red bird, with black wings and grey eyes.
    "
"And this is why the Great Mother, Ar-Amu marked the stars in the Tavekriti's shape."

A breath.  She felt... Lifted.  Yet withdrawn at the same time.  Energized.  Wary.  Now they knew one of her people's stories... There were so many... She wasn't sure if she was ready to share more in the future, but this one.  This one had felt right.

Behind her, a sandy tail tip twitched.  She did not know which constellation to pass on.  She only knew so many of their common names... "The next person tell a story about... Cassiopeia."  That sounded right.
