outmoded charade -- event 1: constellation search/storytelling contest - Warringkingdoms - 05-08-2020

[font=trebuchet ms]"That is Carina- part of the Argo Navis, named for the Argo from Greek mythology."

Rin held the arrow aloft with her telekinesis, its tip pointing to the constellation and tracing it out. "You can recognize it by that star right there- Canopus, the second-brightest star in the night sky- then it follows a sort of dipper shape like this." Hopefully it was more clear to them than it was to her. Turning her head to glance at the others who were gathered, she continued, "The Argo Navis actually has three constellations, all of which are supposed to be part of the 'ship.' Carina is the keel."

Tugging at her scarf, she nodded. "According to myth, an old king sent the Argo's crew out to fetch a magical piece of golden fleece, hoping that the quest would get them killed. Inexplicably, Hera decided to help them out, and they successfully retrieved the fleece and brought it back." That was a significantly condensed retelling, but she was trying to stay laconic.

With a shrug, she added, "Of course, this myth is just that: a myth. The gods would never be so helpful, among other things." Pointing her arrow to the stars in decreasing order of brightness, she went on, "Each constellation really is just... stars. Beta, Epsilon, Theta, Eta Carinae- actually, Eta Carinae was the brightest star in the night sky for a bit, tied with Sirius, while it was experiencing outbursts. One of those outbursts created an entire nebula- the Homunculus Nebula." She traced the clouds of stardust with her arrow.

Twitching her ears, she commented, "As far as some people are concerned, all of that is boring, and it's much more fun to come up with some story about gods and mortals. But frankly, I've had enough of gods for several lifetimes. Nature is much more interesting."

Turning back to the others, Rin put her arrow back in her quiver. "But I know that's not all of you, so let's make a game out of this. One of you picks a constellation, or really, any series of stars that you think looks interesting; then the next one to reply has to tell a story about that group of stars." Shrugging, she added with a half-smile, "It doesn't have to be true. Just make it interesting." Looking over the crowd, she went on, "Once you've told your story, then you pick a constellation for the next person, and so on and so forth."

Walking over to the side of the dock and sitting down, she looked back up at the sky. "Best storyteller gets bragging rights." Well, maybe there'd be a prize, but she wasn't sure what they'd want. Maybe she could figure that out later.

Pointing up at a cluster of stars, she said, "I'll start. First volunteer, tell us a story about Orion." As for which stars were a part of Orion... if they didn't know, they could make it up. It was all bunk anyway.

Re: outmoded charade -- event 1: constellation search/storytelling contest - CAESAR CIPHER. - 05-09-2020

THERE IS NO LIFE, THERE IS NO SPARK !
CAESAR CIPHER. MALE. NO GROUP. NO RANK.
This was all idiotic in Caesar's mind. He mindlessly joined the crowd as Warringkingdoms started her tirade about the night sky, his tail flicking idly. He watched as she pointed out the constellations, rambling about gods and myths. Idiotic. But at least Rin didn't appear to believe in the stories she told, that was a bit reassuring. Although the sky looked pretty, Caesar wasn't much of an astronomer as his sister, Atbash, was. She would talk about the different stars and planets all night. He mused to himself, though fought it back immediately. You don't care for this. Even if he knew what constellation and stars Rin talked about, he wasn't that good of a storyteller. Not to mention he didn't really want to let others know of his knowledge about space; it was needless information.

2D had never really been much of an academic type. Even in the days before numerous head injuries and not so helpful addictions, the serval had never been the one at the head of the pack when it came to brains. He still struggled quite a bit with trying to read, and remembering most of the things that were taught to him that weren't hunting or basic survival was now very difficult. He often felt terrible about the things that he ended up forgetting, but he supposed that it was just sort of a fact of his life now. Needless to say, however, 2D had never learned about the stars or the constellations – or if he had, the singer could no longer remember even a speck of the information he had been given. As a result of this, when he ended up taking a seat beside Caesar for this particular event, he found himself utterly fascinated by what Rin was going to speak about. Compared to the deadpan, bored, and almost emotionless expression that existed on the yellow feline'a face, 2D had practically all of his amazed emotions written right on his face. His pure black eyes were wide with amazement, and he even clapped his paws together a bit when Rin reached the end of her story.

When Rin introduced the notion of the storytelling, the lanky feline found himself utterly fascinated. After all, he had done songwriting with Murdoc in the past, and songwriting was a bit like storytelling, right? You were just telling your stories in a different form. Hopefully, he would be able to tell a story in a more straightforward way, without the use of music. Raising one of his dark paws up in the air, the serval said eagerly, "Oh, me! I c'n tell a story!" He knew absolutely nothing about the actual story of Orion, but he figured he could come up with something entertaining enough. After all, all of the stories of the stars had just been made up at some point, right? With newfound confidence, 2D began his tale proudly, "Orion is an, uh... a livin' plant. Oh, well, I s'pose all plants're livin', but Orion is a special one! Was a special one. 'Cause he can talk, 'n" interact with folks! When he wuz first grown, Orion was awful lonely, since nobody ever came up t'talk t'im. But fen one day an adventurer came up 'n' discovered 'im, and soon people from all over were comin' t'see fis talkin' plant! But eventually the popularity came t'be too much, and Orion ended up gettin' so trampled he passed on. Th'people who trampled 'im felt so horrible fat fey decided t'make 'im part of th'stars, where 'e could always be popular, wifout 'avin' t'ever worry about gettin' trampled again." The story wasn't even remotely similar to the actual story behind the Orion constellation, but 2D seemed rather proud of himself, beaming at his captive audience with a broad grin that showed off his missing teeth. Once he was done, he pointed upwards at the stars, saying softly, "Fe next person t'go can tell a story about... uh... Aquila." 2D could remember hearing that name around camp, when others had been speaking about this event ahead of time.

Tena Moonspinner
Stars.  Flaming balls of gas that lit up the night sky, thousands of light years away.  The petite sand cat remembered, when she was younger, insisting one day she'd touch them.  And burn to a crisp.  With half her face scarred, perhaps it looked as if she did try to touch them.  Chasing a child's dream.

"Clearly, stargazing has to be your idea for you to show any inclination towards it."  The Demdji thinned her lips, ears flicking backwards.  She half-expected to turn and spot a pair of warm brown eyes following her into the night.  Infuriating brown eyes more like.  Overprotective brown eyes... Kriffing Jedi.

In silence, sky blue hues cast upwards, pointedly away from Warringkingdoms, Tena considered the rules of the game.  Truthfully, she knew little of the traditional stories everyone else knew; little enough it was debatable she'd be able to tell fact from creative fiction.  Her people had their own stories.

After 2D told his tale, she leaned over to a nearby NPC, murmuring a quiet request for direction.  Aquila.  It sounded familiar.  In hushed words, she located the constellation; Aquila the Eagle.  The eagle?  A bird.  A bird... She shuffled, raising her voice softly. "I know it as Tavekriti; the little red bird.  Tavekriti is a reminder, that Ar-Amu shaped in the stars for us."

Spoiler:
"And this is why the Great Mother, Ar-Amu marked the stars in the Tavekriti's shape."

A breath.  She felt... Lifted.  Yet withdrawn at the same time.  Energized.  Wary.  Now they knew one of her people's stories... There were so many... She wasn't sure if she was ready to share more in the future, but this one.  This one had felt right.

Behind her, a sandy tail tip twitched.  She did not know which constellation to pass on.  She only knew so many of their common names... "The next person tell a story about... Cassiopeia."  That sounded right.
