he sighed, in relief, maybe? she couldn't really tell, but it was really light, like a weight had gotten lifted off his chest. as her tail landed on his nose he jerked back, making her muscles tense, then soften as a look of concern formed on her face. did she do something wrong? was she at fault, did she turn him away? she didn't want to, she found him rather handsome and wanted to see where her feelings would lead her, and if she scared him off, well, she didn't know what she would do.
before she could ask if it was her fault, however, he interrupted her softly that he was glad it wasn't him that made her sad. the tone of his voice made him realise that she simply startled him slightly and didn't offend him, so she allowed a smile to form on her face, then froze as he said he wished he could take the pain away from her, forever.
she hadn't had anyone say that to her, ever, and wasn't quite sure how to react. having grown up with no father and a mother who couldn't care less about her of her siblings she wasn't used to having this warm feeling inside. fur heating up in embarassment she shuffled her paws in the sand and watched his muscles ripple as he crouched down slightly. getting used to the pattern, she hopped onto the spot betwixt his shoulders and made herself comfortable.
