In all honesty, Roy wasn't aware that Hughes looked into alchemy. From the years he knew him, alchemy never seemed to strike an interest in Hughes, or at least that's what Mustang believed. Hughes was never a state alchemist, nor did he tell anyone that he read on the matter. But even Hughes would know about the taboo that was common among all alchemists. Human transmutation, it is strictly forbidden and it was for a good reason. The Elric brothers were the perfect example, they dared to commit the taboo, believing they had the perfect array. They thought they could bring their mother back to life, to see her smile again. Instead they created a hideous, monstrous creature that put their lives into a world of pain. And then there was Roy, who didn't mean to commit the taboo- but in the end, he still did it.
It was by pure accident too, he really should have listened to Fullmetal before he took any steps closer to that array. It cost him his life, and now he's stuck here to spend the rest of it. The only reason he doesn't view this as a living hell is due to Hughes being here. If Roy was alone, he wasn't sure how long he'd last.
Roy had a feeling on his chest too, a feeling of guilt. He felt guilt for leaving Amestris behind, leaving his unit and Fullmetal to handle the humonculi by themselves. He could have helped save Amestris, if he wasn't so ignorant during that situation. He's just as dead as Hughes, and it was a strange reality to accept. But unlike Hughes, Roy didn't have any plans to change it. Roy has seen what human transmutation did to Edward and Alphonse, once the dead cross the gate, they can't come back. He and Hughes must have past that gate to get here, he knew that it couldn't be possible to Amestris. He wished that he could, but he knew that it would never happen. And that he shouldn't try any crazy stunts either, as that will only cause more pain and agony. He already has enough guilt and sorrow on his heart.
Roy had been padding around the observatory, thoughts running through his mind. He has came to realize lately that padding around was a good way to get these thoughts off of his mind, as there wasn't much he could do. As he padded around, his gaze landed on the doorway to Maes room. Thankfully for Roy, the door was left open and he could see flashing, blue light. The male froze in his place, eyes constricting to slits as he recognized that familiar, blue lightning. Without another thought, Roy allowed his paws to take him into Maes room, coming to a halt at what he saw.
There was Hughes, sitting on the ground, with his front paws firmly on a transmutation circle. A transmutation circle that looked as big as the room. An array that has complex symbols, like really complex symbols. While he looked at it, he began to realize something. This transmutation circle- it looks exactly like the one that managed to get him sent here! A human transmutation circle! The Flame Alchemist thought, What the hell is Hughes doing? He's going to get himself killed again! His ears flattened to his skull, and sudden anger fumed up in his blue eyes. It was the same anger and hostility he had expressed to Fullmetal when he approached Ed and Alphonse not long after they committed the taboo.
"MAES HUGHES!" The Flame Alchemist yelled out in a loud, militaristic voice, surely one Hughes was used to hearing. But probably not directed to him as often. Roy began to run over to the canine, getting closer and closer to the lab and the human trasnmutation array. And without a warning, the male suddenly lunged, attempting to pounce at Hughes and get him away from the transmutation circle. If successful, he and Hughes would land roughly a couple feet away from the circle, thankfully stopping it.
