oh, mama and papa were going to be so upset with her! her favorite dress had gotten ripped and it was one that fin had made for her too! she had also gotten separated from her big sister in a storm a few months back and being the clever girl that she was, she had found a local population to stay with. but now the bears that she had been staying with, had entered hibernation, she was all alone again and she was terrified. heart pounding in her chest, the wolf pup kept her aching bloody paws to keep moving, to follow some kind of scent. she just wanted someone to tell her it was okay, that she was doing good. her jaws ached from holding her papa's old letter opener, the edges dull and scraped up from multiple uses.

fat tears rolled down the pups face, sitting her bottom down and battering the ground with her paws, fussing for a while until she had rested and thrown her tantrum. she remembered her mama's voice chastising her for her tantrums, asking if that was the way that a proper lady would act. remembeing her papa's smooth-as-honey voice made the girl whimper, wishing that her family would come find her. getting up and continuing for a bit, she shook her pelt and keened gently, walking further, up the mountain. curling up under a scraggly tree as night fell, the wolf pup fell into slumber, remembering her second cousin's words about the chaput family being drawn to the sea. as she fell into sleep, her nose twitched at the familiar salty scent, her dreams restful for once in her lonely months.

when bird chirping filled her ears, she awoke with a start, head turning this way and that, her breath misting in front of her muzzle. she swallowed and got to her stiff aching paws, taking the letter opener and limping onwards. she could really smell the sea now, her nose twitching at the salty tang mixed with living beings ... and a scent so faint she thought she had imagined it. cosette. her big sister! small legs trembling wih excitement, the youth urged herself to speed, chasing down the vibrant hope and faint scent, tipping her head back and howling, hoping on all her lungs that her sister would hear her cry before the wind stole it away. gathering all her worth and her grumbling tummy, she kept up her headlong race down through the foothills, pausing to howl again, when closer before continuing her breakneck pace toward the town she could see, tears already in her eyes.
