[font=trebuchet ms]Someone was coming. Instinctively, Fleabane tensed up in preparation to flee- but, upon observing his apparent lack of aggression, she relaxed. He was covered in scars, so he must have seen his share of battles, but his soft tone of voice made it clear he wouldn’t hurt her.
His statements, however, confused her. “Sunhaven” must have been the name of the place, and “Pierce” was his name, but what was an “assistant deputy?” And “business,” well… answering that honestly would get her turned away, more likely than not. A request for a place to stay and something to eat would be taken much more positively if she could contribute to them, but she had no idea how she would.
While she puzzled over her answer, two others arrived- one also claiming to be an assistant deputy, and the other asking about the bee stings. The stings, she could answer for. “Yeah, bees,” she answered in a low voice, glancing down at the grass. “They didn’t follow me here, I don’t think.”
Maybe she could keep up the pretense of hoping to join their ranks. They probably had people coming and going all the time, they wouldn’t notice her slipping out. If it turned out there was something she could do for them after all (unlikely, but not impossible), then she would stay; if the best she could do for them was remove herself from their midst, then she would do that. She wouldn’t be selfish, unlike a certain other tanuki she knew.
“Uh, Fleabane,” she said finally, lifting her head to face the other three again. “Is my name, I mean. I guess I wanted to become a part of this group.”
