The minnow paused, jaw parted, nostrils flaring. The skin-prickling feeling of being watched. Something that didn't belong. She had not heard anything. Had not noticed... No. The child did not like the feeling of someone touching her mind, a closed off, very independent space. No one had ever done that before... Alien. Too surprised to throw up any attempt of guarding.
Her sense of balance swayed. Her heart caught in her throat. No, no. She was just by the stream... There's no ledge in this part of the jungle... The minnow wheezed out a frightened breath, ears flattening against her skull. She very nearly jumped out of her skin at the clash of thunder, instinctively flattening herself to the ground. The weather had been clear moments ago... Not a taste of rain in the air... "Stad le do thoil." Not real... Couldn't be real. Not logically. It didn't make sense.
She took a step back, then scrambled forward, sightless eyes wide in fear as she felt her paws slip where they shouldn't have. Keona returned to a low crouch, trying to crumble beneath trembling legs. She wanted her da... Maybe Uncle Sea or Raz... They could stop this... Surely... If she could just call for them... Would they even hear her from here? She couldn't find her voice, couldn't catch her breath. She couldn't run. Run off a cliff. No cliff. But wasn't there? All around her. The ground simply dropped off. Trapped.
