born to two loving parents in an already large (and growing) family, melantha's childhood was a happy one. believe it or not, she was a sweet girl once. every day was a new adventure, and she loved to run around and play with her siblings, especially stella, with whom she was very close. rowdy and opinionated, she enjoyed getting into arguments and showing everyone who was boss. but mel wasn't just a bossy wild-child; she loved her family. as one of the eldest (and most mature), melantha oftentimes stepping into a maternal role while her mother and father were away hunting for several days. she never minded it much, even if it meant she did not get to be a child for very long. when she and her littermates were about five months old, something terrible happened. whilst playing down by the river, swollen from the snow-melt farther up the mountain, her brother corbett fell into the rapid waters after slipping during a game of chase. melantha did not stop to think, she only reacted, leaping into the river after him. as one of the largest physically out of all her siblings, she managed to grab him by his scruff and tug him to the shore where the rest of the family waited to pull him to safety. melantha moved to crawl out, but the water was cold and her body was already weak from exertion. just as she felt someone reaching out to her, she was struck by debris carried along by the current. she fought to swim back to shore, but her will to survive was overcome by extreme fatigue. she fainted within the rapids, only to awake freezing and starving upon some distant riverbank.
she had never been this far from home before, and despite all her efforts, she could not find her way back to the place of her birth. survival became a necessity. first, she lurked close to the rivers where food was more abundant, observing the bears and wolves as they hunted for fish and attempting to mimic them. hunting was a bit harder, but she picked up the basic skills from her parents before she was swept away, and soon was able to sustain herself on a diet of rabbits and squirrels. melantha learned very quickly that other animals were not to be trusted, as most of them lived their lives as loners and were extremely territorial. it was a lonely life, but she refused to give up. she was determined to return home, no matter how long it took. eventually, she overheard a pair of wolves discussing a clan who lived in the mountains to the north: snowbound. although mel was wary of being around so many strangers, all she could think was that if she was gonna find her family, it was best to start in a place where she could find information and pick up the necessary skills. and thus her life in snowbound begins...
