Notes on the rusty spotted cats
✯ the smallest wildcat species in the world;; head and body length is 35 - 48 cm (14 - 19"), and weighs 0.8 - 1.6 kg (1.8 - 3.5 lb)
✯ found from sea level to elevations of 2100 m (6900‘) in northern low country dry zone, monsoon forest and grassland, southeastern dry zone, monsoon scrub jungle, scrub forest and grassland, lowland regenerating rainforest, arid coastal belts, and on mountaintops
✯ diet includes small birds, rodents, frogs, insects and, possibly, small lizards, as well as domestic fowl
✯ thought to be mainly, but not completely, nocturnal
✯ possibly arboreal but recent sightings always put them on the ground
✯ accomplished climbers; probably hunt in the trees as well as ground
✯ sexual maturity at 68 weeks of age (approx. 15-16 moons)
✯ litters of 1-2 kittens, with newborns that weigh less than an egg
✯ reported life span of 12 years (in captivity)
