THE TELLTALE HEART
I never learned to trust a love song
( cream tabby ; two months ; typhoon minnow )

It was not because the words were trite
( If you ever need me all you must do is wish upon a star and I'll be there )

Silent the part, across pale surface formation a slow and deliberate action, crown that which pressed into thinned lips as departure was marked by the tight closure of teeth, agony worn against soft planes. Return imminent, a promise once spoken with the grandeur accompanying staged conviction. Yet she had not done so, behind left the child for an unknown that which may beyond rusted tracks.

Pirate.

Certain connotations behind such, among dust lined tomes mention marred by the bite of venom, despised for the very concept at core. Beast of a different nature those present upon secluded archipelago, however, if some sense of truth may be derived from shared tales surrounding various exploits. Alone staged her exploration, quelled the gathered fear tainting quickened patter, a heavy spool that settled about chest until each breath had become hellfire.

( I promise this is nearly over, just stay here and wait for mama )

Shallow the grooves cut into loose assemblance of soil, among the grit of dislodged grains an unpleasant sensation their own, unsteady the legs they teetered upon. Too long had they lingered, dormant watcher split between the darkening scape as day broke and that before, inscrutable bridge spanning disquieted depths, futile each sweep as forth climbed shallow peaks. Choice taken, the aftermath all they may reach for.

Always most difficult the first, against splintered boards, soft in manner unexpected for it seemed a sponge greedy in drinking the brine that lapped underside, pressing hesitant step. Best not to look back, discard what is behind. Yet over shoulder did skirt vision, momentary the thought of doing as had been bid, yet exhilaration was a weight unspooling in the cavity of their chest all too quickly for such. Onward pressed, progress a slow and tentative affair for all the bravado that seeped into porous bones, concentration tracing the delicate shape of a frown.

A single misstep, momentary lapse in attention all that is necessary.

Splinters and rust, unforgiving in ways unique. Fine cascade the hairs plucked from that caught, wrong twist enough to chafe skin, gritted teeth barely stifling the broken whimpers. There is no safety here where the ground groans with each movement, braced chin even as futile efforts to free themself are continuously staged. She would be back any moment, assistance would be present and they may indulge in the simple comfort her proximity offered. A dull, dejected hope but one that assisted in some manner, this way and that tiny body twisting as though it would simply be correct positioning that may release trapped limb.

Take what you need while there's time
The city will be earth in a short while
If I'm not mistaken it's been in flames
You and I will escape to the seaside
Diya had slipped out of her shared bed quitly, a gentle kiss against her girlfriend's crown. Just going for a morning walk, you sleep in, she had promised, sleeping out like a breeze. She had always been an early riser, never one to linger in bed for too long. Peace had filled the feline's life since her return, since quiet admittances of love under the cover of night. Despite the occasional disturbance here and there, things had been nice.

Diya's travels took her across the beaches, following up to where the railroad tracks lay. Her path often brought her here, to the stone gates where joiners often washed upon the shore. She liked to keep an eye on it, to make sure that nobody had to wait too long. She had nearly turned away upon not seeing anyone waiting patiently upon the shore.

Her attention was grasped by a flash of white, out upon the tracks themselves. Seeing it fidget and squirm, she quickened her pace, the sound of struggling reaching her ears. As she grew close, she spotted a kitten, small and alone. She knew what such a thing felt like. She slowed to a walk, pawstepts careful as she crossed rotting boards. She didn't want to startle the kitten anymore than it was. "Petit enfant, still. I can help you, but you must be still," she spoke softly, brushing her nose along it's spine as she attempted to calm it. She would lean away, grasping rusting metal within her teeth and pulling. Between its eroding with age, and her strength, it came away and release the kitten.

It appeared to be so young, what was it doing out here all alone? She knew she had to get it back to dry land before the tide rose. Having leaned her lesson many months ago from Trygve, she leaned down and gently nuzzled it. "petit enfant, do you mind if I carry you? It's simply not safe for you here, the water will rise." Her tone was soft, voice quiet as to not startle the light colored kitten.
