the wind had always told the golden dragon for the longest time of the presence of their best friend, from their days of hatching back in their mother's arms when all had been swell and their brothers had romped with them in the streams under the watchful gaze of the second royal couple in the history of hell. the two had grown up in sun-warmed days under the sun, tangling and playing without a concern for the adult ways. until it all came crashing apart.
they could recall the rainy day where they stood above their father's freshly dug grave, head down and wailing their heart out in grief, cass pressed into their side as their mother, the queen, wept over the grave of the three princes, their father and two brothers. the royal family had grown silent and they had come to fear the weight of the crown that would be passed down to them. and so, they had been on the run, avoiding the halls of their home, hell. they had met a young boy in their travels, and had befriended him and quickly and helplessly fallen in love with him. returning home with their new crush and best friend in tow, they would learn that their mother's first husband had reincarnated, leaving them with a foreign terrifying step-father that had sired their newest friend.
that hadn't lasted long, bai shi running yet again after something happened, where a monster had come and taken cass away from them, a monster that had all but paralysed their mother when their mother went to intervene. the carnage of the scene had made bai shi believe cass to be dead as no amount of desperate searching had allowed them any comfort to know if their friend and first crush had ever been buried.
and now, here they were, lost in their memories, patrolling the skies high above, sinuous body twisting and mingling with air currents when the one familiar scent entered their nose, their eyes blowing wide open as they let out a snarling, booming roar that they knew the other would know by heart and send some sign of recognition to. the scent was that of freshly turned soil after a rainstorm, mixed with peeled mandarin oranges, the smell of old books, and crushed sprigs of mint. they could never forget this smell.
