there was no shortage of evil people in the world; no shortage of people who hunted angels for their wings or simply a taste of their heavenly essence. word had gotten out of a young, beautiful little thing that lived with a group of pirates by the sea, half-angel and ethereal in every sense of the word. a halo of stars dancing around the ground of his head, lovely white fur that glowed beneath the light of the moon. it was just how the world worked. forsan et haec olim meminisse iuvabit.
when he had spotted the stranger on the edge of the border, paws still wet from the walk to the isle, he could feel his heart sink. a feeling that seemed to be growing more common the longer he stayed here, with all the delinquents and frightening people that seemed to be interested in joining, if only for the typhoon's ideology. freedom to do whatever you wanted, to live however you wished. raiding and killing and hurting, innocent or not. some proved to be less intimidating than they first appeared, but there were still some that had him on edge. and this man... he knew from the moment he approached that something was off.
fuck, he should have listened to his gut.
he didn't even get the chance to say anything before the hound lunged, snapping his jaws around junji's shoulder and dragging him into the jungle, paws flailing in a blind panic. he cried out in surprise as he was carried through the brush, tears brimming in his eyes from the pain. he kicked out at his attacker to no avail, but the pain seemed to go away, or at least fade a bit when he was eventually set on the ground. the boy scrambled away from the beast, trying his best to get away; a heavy paw landing on his chest held him still, and teeth once more locked onto his arm, snapping the bone in half with ease. a scream bubbled in junji's throat, only to be muffled by a paw.
"they said you's an angel," the hound rumbled in his ear. a tear fell from the sage's eye, ocean blue staring terrified up at the beast. "but you ain't got no wings."
his lip quivered as the paw moved from his mouth, and briefly, he thought about screaming again. it wouldn't help. if wings were what he wanted, and seeing as the boy lacked them, perhaps he'd simply go. "i- i'm not," he said shakily, biting back a sob as his leg throbbed. "not yet, i... i haven't earned them." he swallowed hard and pleaded with his eyes. the dog was silent, staring at him, weighing his options.
the paw on his chest moved to his flank, and pressed down. another crunch, another muffled scream as ribs broke beneath the weight of the hound. a snarl escaped the beast as he listened, turning junji to dig his claws into the boy's shoulder blades, tearing into the pale pink scars. "i'll get 'em, one way or another." he wanted to gag at the pain. the feeling of claws ripping into him, blood staining his white fur crimson. a strangled whine escaped him, tears dripping down his face now, his own claws scrabbling at the ground.
"please," he cried. "dolet, please, it hurts." the pain did not stop, only seemed to grow worse when the beast holding him down retracted his bloody claws and moved to get a closer look at junji. frightened blue eyes met cold slate gray, and for a moment, they simply stared.
his lip curled and a paw was brought down upon the angel's face. once, twice, three times. again and again and again, he was beaten down, barely able to yelp with the frequency of the hits. junji tasted blood in his mouth and could feel cuts opening on his cheeks. his head was slammed into the ground, sending him reeling. the world spun around him, vision blurred, the bitter taste of copper on his tongue. "placere prohibere..." the angel whispered. tears pricked at his eyes and further distorted the world.
why was this happening? oh, he had been so good, so good—why was he being punished? a test of faith, he thought. just another test. junji couldn't choke back his sobs, teeth gritting as his salty tears seeped into his swollen face. father, help me.
the beating stopped.
a shaky wheeze escaped junji as he lay limp in the mud, blood oozing from his small, broken body. somewhere in the distance (or were they next to him? he couldn't quite tell) he heard a voice, urgent and fretting. a quiet sob racked his already trembling body, and finally, he gave in to the darkness that consumed his vision.
