// content warning for even more gore than usual for a vale post
The crow dived from the sky. As ve drew closer to the ground, vis flesh boiled over and expanded, leaving a comet trail of thin smoke. When the ground was close enough to touch, Vale’s wings unfurled and caught the air against vis dark feathers.
Vale stepped onto the ground. Black sludge shimmered on sand wherever Vale stepped, and the jaguar’s maw lolled to the left. “I could see the hunger in your stalk from all the way up there.” Vale’s grey tongue slid out and licked an exposed red eye. “And that is a form of beauty.”
Vis right shoulder popped. Then the whole leg sagged, limp, like a cut marionette.
Vale sunk vis teeth into the dislocated shoulder and ripped. For a jaguar’s jaws crushed a turtle’s shell with brute force, so why shouldn’t it crush its own flesh? The fangs pierced down to the bone. One thrash of the head ripped the muscle. A second snapped the stubborn sinew.
Ve tossed the leg at the zombified lioness. “Eat it. Unless you’d rather burn after harming one of mine.”
Already reconstructing vis body, the feline shrunk. Excess skin sloughed off from the belly as the torso narrowed and vis legs narrowed into spindles. But the wings remained upright and glossy. The severed limb, slower to change than the rest, throbbed pink and raw and oozing until the fur regrew.
The melanism trait and the spots faded. The coat was grey. Nothing special. The black ear-tufts combined with the pelt made Vale’s new form recognizable as a colorless, winged caracal.
