He kept fancying that Ivan was absorbed in something — something inward and important — that he was striving toward some goal, perhaps very hard to attain.

"Stupid bird!" Ivan's hiss of chastisement broke his silent watch.

If the golden eagle chick had looked ugly when she was born, at least she had looked consistent. She was rapidly growing, and her baby feathers were starting to molt away, giving her a disheveled appearance. It wasn't uncommon for Ivan to wake up choking on one of her feathers. "You're the symbol of empires, but you act like this." Ivan sneered, even as he realized it was useless to try to reason with her. The bird's mannerisms were very feline, a direct result of her unfortunate imprinting on Ivan. The black kitten was her primary caretaker, and he did not like it, because if he had been following his philosophies correctly, he shouldn't care about this bird that killed its siblings. It was another paradox that Ivan found difficult to reconcile.

    And so was Caustic.

Ivan had difficulty accepting Caustic's scientific methods. The concept of sacrifice, whether voluntary or involuntary, was not something he was keen on endorsing.

This was why Ivan was sitting at Caustic's door a few hours after the sun had risen. A few days had elapsed since Ivan caught Caustic in his experiment and his goal of returning no matter what was going to be fulfilled today. "Out, out." Ivan muttered, using a hind leg to push away the dual-headed eagle. He hadn't named her (and he was 80% sure that they were a 'her') because that would give him emotional attachment. He couldn't have that. Ivan kicked a stone and the dual-headed bird immediately stopped in her attention-seeking and dashed after it in that strange zigzagged way that was typical for two-headed organisms.

Ivan almost laughed. Almost. Because he was finally rid of the bird of course. Not for anything else. He didn't want Caustic to open the door and see that Ivan was struggling keeping a bird under control. He straightened his posture and continued to wait regally.
