She was usually a bystander to it, though sometimes was a victim herself, only able to watch others be beaten mercilessly, whipped and chained and forced to do the work their masters didn't want to. Once she had seen her own mother as the one to receive the lashings, the memory of her at the whip's mercy the only thing she saw before she was sold off elsewhere. She never knew what had become of her after that.
It was a cruel thing, being in an inferior skin. But she had come to realize that she wasn't anymore, that she was an equal--and it was such a bizarre concept to her. The idea of being worthy was foreign to her, someone who had grown up as a slave to others. But she wasn't complaining.
Cosette turns at the sudden presence, startled by his voice and even more so the glint of his teeth, his hostile stance reminding her of her poor combat skills. She stares with wide eyes, a spike of fear running up her spine. He smelled like them, but she didn't recognize him. Oh.
"[glow=black,2,300]Oh, uh--I'm Cosette. I was a healer here, a while ago, and I recently came back.[/glow]" she explains curtly, wanting to defuse the situation before it got ugly. Why did she always find herself in these situations?
