[align=center][div style="width: 500px; text-align: justify; font-size: 9.4pt; line-height: 1.4;"]Yeah, he'd been that naive kid once. Too bright-eyed through all the grime, not wanting freedom but something less shitty for the people who'd never known anything else. He'd given himself over freely to that cause, willing to bleed for what he believed in, and he did, plenty of times; it was worth it, at least in the beginning, when weary, fatigue-lined faces thanked him silently for trying when no one else would. But it didn't stay that way, because while his desire to protect remained unchanged, the people around him didn't. Ana was steadfast throughout, though she'd fought a losing battle in attempting to keep the distance between Gabe and Jack from widening more than it already had, and beyond the three of them, the people higher on the rungs became...greedy. Or maybe they had been scheming the entire time, right under their noses. Whatever it was, the idealistic spark flickered, and then it died when he gave himself over to the eggheads, unable to see another way out. Even if everything had gone smoothly, if the ranks weren't filled with selfish bastards, he knew he would have still burned out, one way or another. Couldn't give yourself forever and expect to have leftovers.
It could've been worse. He was here, relatively fine, with Laz. He kept up a routine of patrolling, knowing there would always be somebody around, and, inevitably, there was. A kid. An easily spooked kid, to boot. Taller than Gabe, unsurprisingly, since he pulled the shortest straw when the eggheads were doing- whatever the fuck they did.
He looked pained, seemed to have an issue seeing. Another arrival with a head issue, then? The kid could use a bit of rest, too, about two days of it. "The tooth fairy," Gabe said dryly, though at a lower volume for both their sakes. "What brings you here, kid? Need something for your head?"
