She had once been ripped away from her family, too. She was taken away from everything she knew, forced into a new place with new faces but the same rules. She wasn't a person still, only an object that had been bought and taken away from her mother. She tried not to think about it, willing the memory away every time it surfaced, as it only caused problems. They were too painful for her to think about.

So, as she came across them, Cosette could empathize with how the kitten felt. She could see the fear in her eyes and she knew that on that day she had had the same look. Confusion, apprehension. She had wanted to go back, to be by her mother's side again. But she had quickly learned, had grown up and matured quickly as she endured it all alone. She wasn't a naive child for long.

The serval knew that this was what happened, believing this was a normal thing. But it didn't dull the ache in her chest as she watched the small child. It wasn't fair, but life wasn't easy, either. Unsure how to think or feel, she lowered her eyes towards the sand, a saddened frown on her face. She quickly shook her head as she began to recall that time again, trying to ignore the echoes in her brain. She shouldn't be here.
