[font=trebuchet ms]As Caesar approached, Paper opened his mouth to ask about the conspicuous bruises covering his form- but fell silent as Caesar announced that Pincher had died, staring with wide eyes. Pincher, dead? He might have included an order in his note to not die for a reason, but he hadn’t seriously expected the captain to bite it. Why hadn’t Vanessa mentioned it, though?
Once Vanessa clarified, Paper initially let out a small sigh of relief- but then quirked a brow. How exactly did one come back from the dead? He had heard the typical ghost stories about mummies and zombies and the like, but he had never thought such things could actually exist in real life. It didn’t gel with what he knew about the requirements for life, and the decaying process after death.
Come to think of it, hadn’t Georgie possessed a new body some time ago? Maybe it was possible to return from death that way, if you were quick enough to evade the spirits that took you to the afterlife. Maybe that was how Pincher did it... and maybe, had they wanted to, his mother and brothers could have done the same.
That was a lot of maybes, though, and he ought to ask Pincher in person before drawing any conclusions. Blinking away that train of thought, Paper nodded. ”Congratulations,” he said, flicking his good ear. ”Does that mean there have been changes to the ranking system?” Unless she had decided to go for the warfare branch instead of the commune branch, it didn’t make much sense for her to be a Privateer under the system that was in place before he left.
As Goldenluxury approached, Paper turned to look at her- and furrowed his brows. Those facial scars had not been there before he left, he was almost certain, and she looked practically dead on her feet from exhaustion. This was Pincher’s kid, from what he recalled, so maybe the temporary death of her father had messed her up. ”I’m alright,” he answered finally, with a nod. ”What about you?”
