They can assume it's from a previous tenant, or perhaps it was left there by someone. What's inside it, and what realizations does your character make about it? Does whatever it contain (pictures, a note, etc), challenge a viewpoint of theirs, or start a mystery?

Take the following list of words:

Use the first word of this list to create your first sentence. Then, consider a scenario that would challenge your character. Maybe they're attempting to make a new friend, or perhaps they look into the mirror and notice something about their appearance that they hadn't noticed before- or perhaps, they go so far as to plan a murder. Whatever the case is, create a scene with the rest of the words in the list and challenge yourself to put them in context that would create a complex discovery or scene with your character. For instance, maybe 'glasses' is more than just a pair of reading glasses, maybe it's a scrying mirror instead. What happens?

Let's delve into the past! Or, perhaps the present moment. Whichever scene you decide to undertake must include the following line of dialogue:

Was this in a bad situation, or a good one? Was it one that challenged them, or made them angry? Or was it something they said to someone else? Why? What did it teach them?

Now, you can either take this in the literal sense, in that silus finds some mushrooms and does something with them, or take a more philosophical interpretation of finding mushrooms in the woods. Whatever it is, what happens? Does Silus eat them, or what takes place? It is a tale about blooming even in the more adverse of places or a threat/poison of something in the future? Challenge a trait or a belief of your character using the inspiration of this image, and see what you come up with!
