lately, happiness, real happiness had been a foreign concept for the boy. ever since the day he had fled home, left his mother behind. since the day his father had gone away and never come back. junji had struggled. it was hard, putting on a happy face, but he had to be good. he couldn't be good for his mother if he was always sulking around. he'd never rise to be an angel if he was sad about the past.

he just wanted to make them proud.

it was one of the rare days that junji allowed himself a break. he sat alone by a muggy little pond somewhere in the jungle, lazily swishing his paw through the water. beside him, a satchel filled with herbs and various flowers he'd collected, along with a worn leather journal. the journal he held close, kept it under his other paw, safe against his side. it was old and falling apart, but it was so, so special to him. it belonged to his parents. it belonged to all three of them. they spent days together, writing on the wrinkled pages. his father left letters for he and his mother, his mother wrote notes on herbs and other things she didn't want to forget.

he swirled his paw in the water and sighed. he remembered a day, some weeks after his father left them. he and his mother sat together on their blanket, watching the water, until mother pulled out the journal and began to write in it. when she finished she pushed it to him and set the pen down, leaving him confused until he read the page.

    what makes you happy, junji?

    you do, mother.

    other than me, my love.

i don't need anything but you, mother.

junji closed his eyes. why did she have to tell him to go? he couldn't understand. he just wanted her back. but deep down, the child knew it would never happen. they would never be a family again. they were doomed from the second his father disappeared into the clouds. and now, here he was, close to tears in the middle of a jungle, on an island with a group he'd never even known existed. it was overwhelming. everything was so overwhelming.

    what makes you happy, junji?

"i don't know," the child placed his paws over his ears. "i don't know, mother, i don't know." i miss you. "i don't know." please come back. "i don't know." i can't do this without you.

    "i don't know..."
