it had been some time, too long really, since she'd set paw into the swamps. she'd come back to life out in the graveyard however long ago and now she was cursed to live on. she'd taken to traveling some time after she'd re-awoken, and within her travels, she had fallen in love. some time in those travels, her brother's presence disappeared and she was on her own once again, save for the only other companion she had. Briar, her dearly beloved. over the years, months, whatever time span it was, they'd grown closer. close enough that their bond had led to more, her heart had recovered enough to love somebody once again. she was no god, but she was enough for Briar, and that had been all that mattered to her.

deep was the unsteady breath in her lungs now as Mei cast her gaze around the swamps, the scrap of fur held gently in her mouth being her young daughter. setting down her daughter on a patch of dry land, Mei would bend her head to inhale her scent, tricking herself into thinking she could still smell the faintest of Briar's scent. closing her eyes for a moment, she took the chance to ground herself, "Don't wander away, little one. Stay close to Mom.", she spoke softly as she gazed down at the blessing that had come of her union with Briar. tears stung at her eyes then, remembering her in all of her beauty and finding that her heart still screamed at the memories. shaking her head faintly, she took a break to breathe and relax, the hothead's attention on their surroundings and checking for any dangers. pressing a paw to her aching lower jaw, she narrowed her eyes and exhaled heavily, "Come, Meimei. Let's carry on. Keep your paws on the wood, stay under Mom, 'kay?", she requested of her daughter as she got back to her paws and began the trek deeper into Tanglewood's territory, short tail flicking and ears rotating as she continued the journey back home. mei. a name she hadn't heard in a long time. the looks she recognised, however, and the reaper rose to her paws lithely to greet the mother and her child. "mei? is that you? oh sins, it's been such a long time since i've seen you! the female's smile brightened as she halted in front of the pair, giving the child a softer grin, mischief twinkling in her optics. "hello you! i'm kiara, what's your name?" she said softly, swishing her tail before directing the next sentence to mei. "she's stunning, mei." she wasn't sure how to express how happy she was that mei was back, but she was really happy to see the female again, despite them not having been that close of acquaintances in the past.

mei. someone he knew through his mothers. he followed the reaper, lobes twitching. ignoring formalities and knowing she'd recognise him, lucinder shot her a smile and nodded at the child. "welcome back, mei. it's been a while, indeed." optics shining with mirth and muted excitement he lifted a paw to let a small ball of fire start dancing above the pads in hopes to excite the child and give her energy to make the last leg of the journey.

Xiao Mei had been clutched in her mother's jaw for the vast majority of the journey but the times that she had been set loose she was constantly bounding around and chasing after anything that caught her attention. She usually wouldn't stray too far from her mother but a few times she had been caught a lot further away than the child had expected. The cub squealed with excitement when her mama placed her down, already itching to run off and explore the new area that they were in. But when her mother told her not to wander away it left the cub to pout as she begrudgingly followed after her mother, ducking underneath her as she instructed. "But mama I wanna explore!" she whined out to Mei.

It wouldn't be long that unfamiliar faces appeared before the Xiao Mei and her mother. The cub pranced forward, chest puffed out and ears pressed forward with a low yet small hiss slipping past her muzzle. "Who are you and how do you know my mama?" she asked with a huff. "If you're here to hurt us well I won't let you!" she stated, acting all big and intimidating. Though the facade quickly disappeared when the flames appeared. A squeak slipped past the child and she quickly ducked back underneath Mei, trying to hide from the offending thing that seemed to startle her.

The tigress lumbered through, a low, rumbling growl leaving her tired form. [b]"You're scaring the child. Back up, please." she turned her blind gaze to Lucinder, then Kiara, before falling on Xiao Mei and Mei herself. "Welcome... back, i suppose, to the swamp. Are either of you hurt?" she looked over their white outlines for any signs of injury, any tint of red.

she was just trying to be nice, but oh well. casting her gaze skywards she shrugged. "i live here, just like your mother used to do." her voice was suddenly void of all the warmth it had possessed earlier. she had tried to be nice, and apparently so had lucinder, but the stupid thing apparently saw everything as a threat, so it didn't matter to kiara anymore how she behaved. just another mouth for tanglewood to feed, no?

he had no care for seven and whatever she said, and he could see that kiara felt the same way. with a shrug he let his gaze linger on the child then her mother before turning away, taking a few large deliberate steps back as seven had so nicely ordered him to do. this child was weak. what happened to the cubs that actually enjoyed magic? he had grown up all aronud it, had been burned more times than he could remember, and that had only excited the lion even more and made him love the art, pushing for him to continue it after his mother passed. he shook his head. the children in this generation were doomed. how silly of them, for having travelled however much distance to be scared of a simple magic show.

Xiao Mei let out a hiss at the coldness the two were now giving her. She was just a cub that has spent her entire life around her mamas and that's it, of course she was startled after having unfamiliar faces shoved in hers and then fire thrown about. The lynx cub glared at Kiara and Lucinder, not trusting either one of the two now, especially with how quickly their facade fell.

Her gaze shifted towards Seven, hesitantly watching the larger feline. She wasn't sure about her either but at least she was giving space. Small claws dug into the ground beneath her, cheeks puffed with air as the cub continued to glare at all the unfamiliar faces. She didn't like being here anymore and wanted to go back home.

the hound was new enough to tanglewood that he didn't recognise mei, but was familiar with seven, kiara and lucinder. after hearing seven tell the other two to back off the male halted hesitantly, stretching out his neck to sniff at mei and her child, keeping his distance. offering a friendly bark and wagging his tail the german introduced himself with a small smile. "ich heiße christian! willkommen zurück, mei."

BURN THE BOAT BURN THE SAIL

sometimes, it felt like he was the last to know anything.

pawsteps carried the luminary over to the growing gathering of bodies with a raised eyebrow, decked out in his lion form, a body of nightmares all to himself. weary was the breath that left him as he observed Lucinder and Kiara's reactions as well as Seven's, silver gaze watching the youth before moving up to the bobcat. another grandchild of his master's, it would seem, if his memory served him right. offering the woman a head nod, he would come to stand some distance back, avoiding the child as much as he could for the painful memories of his own that had gone missing, adopted and biological. "Mei. Welcome back.", he would murmur, recognizing the hauntedness in her gaze, hell, he knew it like a best friend himself.

"She must be rather young.", he murmured, casting a quick glance over the cub before back up to the exhausted bobcat, a hint of tired amusement in his own at the child's spitfire reaction, "I think you could hurt us more than we could hurt you, spitfire. They didn't mean to scare you.", he paused for a second as he maneuvered his large and aching body to a slight bow, heavy paws keeping the lion up. "Come, return home, Mei. We will give you as much aid as we can.", he murmured, sniffling as he turned aside on the path, grateful for the veil covering his mouth.
