Sleep had grown fitful and rare, something they sought and yet seemed unable to obtain for any length of time, each small snatch of rest they could gain touched with nightmares. It had grown hard to force themself to even close their eyes when night came, fear a powerful thing as it touched their young heart, left it to skip a beat and grow erratic once they dared to allow their lids to fall shut, rasping breath edged with sobs they couldn't quite voice. There was nothing different about this night though they had sought the comfort and warmth of Moon, curled tight against his side as the lion slumbered, quiet in his sleep though the child was not, twitching and murmuring soft sounds.
Mere minutes. Such was all Harland could stay like that before their breath grew short, a heavy weight pressing upon their chest forcing them to shake off the remnants of sleep, their body shaking as they struggled to contain the need to cry, swallowing hard against the lump in their throat. Shaky are the movements which draw the darkly toned child to their paws, golden eyes shifting between the bodies around them, some familiar while others are but faces they can barely recognise, watching for movement as they take a slow step. Each after it is placed with some thought, a few seconds spared between each, stretching out the short passage to the entryway of the hide.
A soft sound escapes their lips as they cast a look over their shoulder, for a time wondering how good an idea this was when the last time they had wandered alone had ended with their throat opened, left for dead. It was different here, however, a gentle sense of security present which settled their frayed nerves enough for the child to slowly move away from the hide, quickly moving to the observatory's entrance.
Through their nose Harland took a deep breath, enjoying the chill of the night air, a soft, content sigh riding upon their exhale. Stepping out onto the path they took a slow, easy pace, not quite paying attention to their surroundings, simply enjoying the peace of the night.
