Ever since he returned to Tanglewood, the demon was on edge. He wasn't sure why he was surprised — leaving the mainland for work in a secluded location meant that he would be out of the loop. But damn, things really went downhill. In his lack of knowledge on the situation, he worried for Tanglewood. What was going to happen next? Would he stay on the island and watch over the farm's progress, or was it time to get back home and take up arms in this whole Typhoon nonsense?

It was a question he would leave for Aesior. Zjarr hoped to meet with the Luminary soon. Maybe he would have the time tomorrow. For now, it was time to rest up and gather the strength to push forward.

The task of soothing his agitated mind proved to be much more difficult than he thought it would be. The medic he visited had given him some treatment for some of his open wounds, the cuts and burns that would fade away soon enough, though their stinging brought even him to a wince at times. I'm rusty. I am. The care plan was working as intended, but his mind wandered nonetheless, riddled with questions and concerns. Zjarr couldn't sleep in these conditions. The husky threw open the bedroom door and wandered into the exposed space of the rest of his old cottage in the town. The bottle of rum, collected from a previous Typhoon visit as he last recalled, sat on a wooden cabinet with the rest of his liquor collecting dust. It was a decent height up from the floor, partially to ensure that the pups couldn't reach and partially to make alcohol less easily accessible to him. He needed to wean himself off the poison, but perhaps there were nights where he could make exceptions.

He pushed himself up onto the counter, taking the rum into his jaws and leaping back down. For a beat, he stopped to spit out the dust that accumulated on the bottle and entered his mouth, wiping the glass down before he picked it back up once more. The bottle had a little over half of its contents left. It would be more than enough for himself.

Anxious paws led Zjarr out of his cottage and beyond the boundaries of the town, eager for a less confining change in scenery. Each step shot burning fire through his muscles, up to his shoulder and across his back, making him grit his teeth against the bottle. He followed an expansive tributary river as it opened up to a great delta, with the ocean in clear sight. The air was thinner here and void of much of the humidity that plagued the town of Tanglewood's swampy domain. It was easier to breathe. His paws made contact with the wood that made up the shore's docks, some planks old and some newer from recent repairs. This would be a wonderful place for swimming. Not that he planned on swimming.

With the moon as his witness, Zjarr unscrewed the bottle and let the sweet, strong liquid trickle past his lips and down his throat, burning it as it traveled. He never loved rum, but he would accept it as an okay alternative to something better. It was a cute cop in the Typhoon (buying rum from pirates? yes sir!). Whiskey, though, would forever be his first and only love.

It was his first drink in far too long, and he hardly felt the transition between lucidity and madness. It came quickly, heavyweight as he was, but he still held onto the ounce of sobriety he had left. He hadn't gone fully mad yet, nor did he intend to. He just wanted to stop hurting, stop wondering, stop caring.

The stings faded into a deep soreness that only occasionally made its presence known, and Zjarr exhaled a deep sigh of relief. What a night.

Zjarr had finished licking his wounds after the Typhoon's unexpected raid. He didn't exit the fight without his fair share of injuries, though he determined that none of them were serious enough to render him out of commission for too long. His muscles screamed as he moved, and he felt lethargic from tapping into much of his magical energy. His body wanted to slump down in its place and rest for ages, but his mind was wide awake.

The demon came home to an overwhelming number of questions, starting with the elephant in the room — why would the Typhoon do this in the first place? What had happened between the two clans while he was on the island? He needed time to get caught back up to speed on the mainland affairs. In the meantime, though, he could offer some better news for Aesior.

After a visit to a medic, Zjarr had spent the night in his old cottage in the Tanglewood town. Dust collected on the shelves from lack of use and cleaning, and the trinkets he had set out months ago still remained in their place, perfectly sound. Bottles of liquor sat where they always were, with a glass sitting out next to them. He drank that night, though he was too tired to push his limits as he often did. He only needed enough to get his mind off the pain that shot through his body when he moved, just enough to aid his slumber. Once in a while, he caught himself casting a glance in the room where his children once slept. Their makeshift beds were there still, empty and unmade. No one had been in the room in months. They grew up. They don't gotta stay if they don't wanna.

The resources he brought back from the island were delivered to his cottage, sitting down in the center of the house in a stack. It wasn't everything they harvested from the island; the haul merely served as a taste of what the new land could offer, but it would do for now.

When the sun made its way through the windows of the cottage, Zjarr stirred himself awake and pushed through the door, maneuvering himself to where he remembered Aesior making his residence in. He held his breath for a beat as he stood at the entrance. Would he even be here? He hadn't paid much attention to the Luminary during the battle and wasn't certain about his physical state afterwards. Regardless, it was worth a shot. If he wasn't here, he'd just go out looking for the feline. "Aes. If he wasn't here, he'd just go out looking for the feline. "Aes. Another year passed by, another year spent away from the people he'd lost. Another year of living and grieving. Weren't birthdays supposed to be some kind of celebration Some kind of event to enjoy? The morning had found him waking up alone in his home again, the whispers of ghosts in his ears, ghostly feelings accompanying him all morning. He'd gone about making himself a fresh hot cup of tea and had taken it outside of his house, to the planter pots he owned with plants beginning to grow in them. Watching over his seedlings, the gray tom had sat in relative silence before the sun had come up, the chill in the air making his breath mist around his face and steam rise from his mug of tea. Eyes half-closed as the sun began to climb the sky, it's rays slowly illuminating drifts of fog and moisture rolling through Tanglewood's village, his only working eye spotting the shapes of ghosts among the rays of sunshine. His breath barely stirred the air around him, watching with a removed sadness to him as the ghosts went about their business, their hazy forms and shapes moving about slowly, unaware of the tears that had built in his eye. He didn't need to look to know who sat beside him, who played at the bottom of the steps to his house. He'd known them well in life, those he had called family, the partner he'd loved and the children he had raised until they were taken from him by life. He could feel the ghostly press of fur and hear the faint whispers of laughter, his head bowed as he fought between reality and his memories, the two meshing all too well. He dared not open his eyes because he knew if he saw them again, he would be destroyed.

Inhaling now as bird song reached his ears, the feelings drifting away as the sun bore through the mist and fog, warming his fur slowly. He didn't know how long he sat there, reminiscing years past, birthdays past. Lifting his head now, knowing that the ghosts wouldn't be close enough to touch him and taking some solace in that. Gazing out over the sleepy village he curled his tail and got to his paws, stretching his back upwards with a soft groan. Drinking the last of his tea, he turned to head inside his home, mug in mouth. Pushing the door open, he drifted indoors and breathed out, letting the door remain open for some air circulation. Walking over to the wall, he set the mug down by his other few dishes of assortment to be washed at a later time, turning to the chest he owned. Brushing dust from the top with a paw, he opened it with a bit of a labored push of paws, listening to the creak of it's old hinges. Peering inside, his heart beginning to beat in his throat. Corrupttimelines ... where are you now? Where have you gone?, he found himself asking into the silence, his throat unable to form the words he wanted to say. Where had the other gone, so soon after returning?

Taking out a carefully wrapped package in beeswax covered fabric, he would set it down on one of the pillows he slept with. Paws carefully unwrapped the protective covering, his ears drooping with his whiskers as he trembled with tension. Taking a breath, he finished unwrapping a beautiful necklace, it's silver face catching sunlight spilling in from the door. He'd received this last year, from the one that he wondered about. The one who had managed to convince him without a single word that his broken heart could heal and feel once again. The one who had left him and everyone else behind. The one who was missing, the one who he feared would never return again. Had he been too cold in his pain when he'd returned? He had not remembered the other, too destroyed by the confusion wrought of fighting for his soul. For his life. Breath shuddering in his lungs, he would pick up the necklace that held the emblem of the world tree and slip it over his head, shocked by the chill of the metal against the scar tissue on his throat.

Pressing a paw to the metal with a quiet breath, ears flattening as he heard a voice, "Corrupttimelines left you, Aesior. Why do you hold onto this belonging? You've been left behind once again, there's no need to continue on like this. You can let it go. Let them all go."
No. I can't do that. I'd never be able to forgive myself if I did that. I can't let them go, any of them. They're all alive and precious in their own way. He can leave me as much as he wants, I will always wait for him. For all of them. he thought in answer to the voice only he could hear. Shaking his head, he got to his paws again and looked back out his front door. Closing his eyes to half lid and holding the necklace in his paw close to his chest he walked towards the open door. Stepping outside, the peace that more or less surrounded the sleepy village was shattered by the hair raising sound of a war cry, the tom's fur standing on end in surprise and apprehension as he saw bodies begin to flood into the camp of Tanglewood. His paws brought him flying out the door, tail raised high over his back and bushed out, jaws spread to warn his people, a broken throat unable to speak keeping him from it. The sound of a snarl and the creak of wooden boards took his attention as motion blurred at the side of his vision, an assailant on his porch. Turning to face his attacker with a silent snarl the scarred male felt his claws sink into wood as he attempted to throw himself towards his assailant, gray eye glowing a violent bright blue.

Since March, the Luminary had thrown himself into his forge and the works he made within it, catching up on orders and trying to force himself back into some creative outlet. The return of Corrupttimelines had bothered him somehow, like agitating a raw wound that needed to be cleansed. He'd thought he'd ripped that bandage off a year ago, when he had accepted that Cory wouldn't return. Was he beating a dead horse in hoping that the mysterious dragon would stay and continue to return each time he left camp?

Breath misting around his face as the Luminary took slow steps from his home, headed for the well trodden path from his stairs to the forge he had set up on the edges of the settlement. Whiskers trembling as the gray tom cat strolled along, his one eyed gaze reaching for the skies where rhe sun just began to enlighten the darkness of night. Had he had an alarm clock or some time piece, he surmised that it would have been some time close to four or five in the morning. Inhaling, the tom was met by the dank and earthy scent of leaf rot and new greenery. Nose twitching as he strode through camp much like the ghosts that haunted the territory, the tom could only exhale wearily, wondering how much time it would take him to pull his head from the clouds.

Cracked pads would sift over decaying leaf matter and a rocky path, making a mental note to himself to drag in some sand for this path, leading up to the old building he had repurposed for his forge. The old brick and mortar building more or less remained standing, which was more than enough for him. Leaning against the doorframe as he mounted the stairs indoors, joints creaking in protest and back all but screaming. It seemed that as age weighed on him, old injuries began to feel like they had never healed. He was still getting used to the loss of his eye for the gods' sake. Absently rubbing his cheek on the door frame of his forge, leaving his scent on the jagged brick as he shuffled his way into the dark depths. Tail waving as the Luminary wiped a paw over his bare and scarred face, lingering on the fresh ridges of scars cutting down the left side of his face, where his eye had been and over his lips, broken whiskers having grown back over the time since the big fight.

Gray gaze drifted into the depths of his dark forge, to the hearth and its empty yawning mouth, to the bellows below where he could press his paws. Inhaling the crude scent of metals and ores, the tom shook his whole body and stepped forward, letting heat form and build in his paws, watching sparks appear in his fur, lifting himself to his hind legs and reaching, letting his now burning paws brush against the fuel for his fire, charcoal and fresh dry wood. Inhaling the acid stench of the baby fire, of smoldering bark and wood, ears listening to the snapping and popping of wood, eye sliding to half-mast in content as he drew his paw back. There was a sense of familiarity here, of belonging. He could imagine that he was around different faces, different hearts and homes, different times. How much he had changed since those long ago days when he made bread on the hearth stones of his long overgrown forge. When he'd held counsel in friends and family.

Standing there, he was unaware of the tears that welled in his eyes or rolled over, the agony of being separated from those he had called his found family striking at him as he stared into the fire. He could make out their shapes in the flames, his breath catching several times before he shook his head, his earrings jingling softly in the relative quiet. Walking to his unorganized collection of materials Aesior would pick out a rather unassuming amount of iron and carry it over to the growing and steady fire, feeling the delicious heat radiating off of it. A small and thin shield of flame would appear over his fur as he selected a pair of tongs and held up the Iron piece, backpaw working the bellows to keep the fire hot.

It came as an after thought as the smith lowered his material into the fierce flames raging from the charcoal rhat he should have announced that he could hold a blacksmith lesson for anyone interested. Shrugging a shoulder, the Luminary decided that he would teach whoever might show up to the building that was slowly beginning to put off its usual smell and smoke, as rhe sun began to climb into the sky. His goal today was to make at least one blade or knife, perhaps some armor later on. There was much he would be happy to teach.
What a weird name to have taken on after her separation from her living parent. Was she anything like her name? Perhaps she was and she just masked it well. The death of her father had not been forgotten. She never blamed Aesior for what happened back then and when she got lost, well.. She never blamed him then ether.

She couldn't let the past define her and she took her name not because of who she was, but to let her past go. She had always been Venom. The impulse part was new and she clung to it like a banner of her stupid choices. A reminder to never let the past haunt her. To never make dumb choices and to think first. She knew what she had done and what she needed to do.

Perhaps that was why she did not agree with the way others spoke about Cory and his return. No, it was an impulsive decision that led Cory to leave and that was fine. He had things to handle and she understood that to a deeper level. She made a choice that caused her to lose everything. She did not want to see Cory suffer alone as she had. Besides, it was clear how Cory felt about Aesior and that her father felt the same about him.

That made her understand on a deeper level that what Cory needed was time. Time and someone in his corner besides her father. So she decided to be that someone. She had been there for his panic attack. She made the call then. That was why she was standing outside his home now. Why she was knocking on the door she had once so carelessly entered.
tw for blood, death, anxiety attack, nightmares, just a bunch of unpleasant experiences ]

Sitting alone in his house, the domestic feline tended to his plants. This way and that he swayed as he watered each of his delicate herbs. The lavender intertwined with his paw as he gracefully slipped through the plant life, grasping tiny weeds and plucking them from his carefully hosted gardens. Soft hums passed his fragile lips as he did so, trying to keep his focus upon the world around him rather than the recesses of his mind. Lately, he had been so full of agony and peril from deep within his brain, incapable of grounding himself or making sense of the atmosphere surrounding his petite form.

For days, he would hardly eat. Some, he refused to sleep. Yet he never brought himself to the brink of cracking open another pristine bottle. His paws refused to entangle themselves and wrench open the poisonous liquid which altered his mind. Instead, he tried to cope in other manners. Tending to his garden was of the few things that brought him peace since his return, as it was a duty done in solitude. It was familiar as well, which is something he desperately craved for by this point. Everything had shifted and his world had turned upon its head. For once, he just longed for something to be right again.

Approximately half an hour passed before the sleek feline finished caring for his garden. He was beyond exhausted, finding himself straining to keep his eyes open. They fluttered closed multiple times as he tried to maneuver through the territory, feeling the intoxicating grasp of slumber encasing his body. Soon, he could no longer resist the promise of a sweet slumber. Perching his body up against a tree trunk, he allowed himself to slip into unconsciousness.

——

It was late. Corrupttimelines was walking along a dirt path on the way home with a fresh bundle of herbs clutched in his maw. The wind was ripping through the trees and causing the leaves to topple over themselves. As the trees roared and stretched their limbs every which way, Cory groaned softly. His eyes narrowed into slits at the bitter realization that a storm was inbound.

“Ish about to rain,” he proclaimed to his sister, the herbs in his mouth muffling his words as he walked. Rejectedlove whipped around and glanced at him before rolling her eyes. Her mouth was full of prey she had gathered to bring back to their resting place. She didn’t even need to breathe a word into the air for him to know what she was saying. She knows, just hurry up.

He padded a bit faster to catch up to her, sticking by her side as the wind picked up once more. It whipped and whirled all around them, throwing stray branches in every direction. Cory’s eyes widened as one narrowly whizzed by his head, shrinking into himself to avoid being smacked upside the face. Annoyance prevailed in his expression as he glanced to Rejectedlove with a frown. She glanced back at him after a moment, and nodded her head in understanding, then turned and glanced about for temporary shelter. Cory assisted her, trailing up by her side and squinting as the downpour began. Rain whipped into their pelts, stinging his face as he tried to shelter the herbs from the onslaught of water. Rejectedlove hissed, just before her eyes locked on a nearby cave. She motioned for Cory to follow, and follow he did.

The duo sprinted through the rain, racing through the torrential downpour as it began. Hideously dark clouds sprawled and flashes of intense lightning struck across the skies, thunder roared with a night larger than a lion. For once, a storm actually had the siblings feeling a heavy sense of unease. They hadn’t much more time left before it would worsen when they skidded into the cave, panting as they both dropped the fruits of their labor upon the dimly lit cave floor.

“Ah shit. I’m sorry Cory, I had no idea it would rain today,” she apologized, panting as she shook out her water logged pelt and moved deeper into the cave, trying to shield herself from any more of the rain. In her current state, she looked quite the mess. Her stark orange hued pelt was a deep ember hue from the rain, and her gaze was full of nothing but sheer annoyance with herself. Cory frowned and shook his head, dropping the herbs behind a rock to protect them as well before moving to her side.

“Can’t predict the weather. I just hope we can get home before our parents have a cow,” he replied to her, to which Rejectedlove nodded in sincere agreement. Cory and Rej hated being around their parents after a long hunt, that much he knew. In an attempt to wait out the storm, the duo sat upon the cave floor and simply stared at the pounding rain.

They waited hours for the rain to settle, and once it slowed a little they decided it would be best to just keep going. Grasping their supplies, they both maneuvered back onto the trail. The siblings made sure to keep close to one another for fear of one of them getting lost in the rapid storm.

Everything was fine, until a wild dragon appeared in their path.

Verdant scales swooped down from the sky sporting tattered wings. Crimson eyes peered down at them with an intimidating huff. Immediately, the two stood side by side with a burning look flooding their gazes. They each went on the defensive, knowing this dragon wasn’t about to step aside and kindly let them pass.

The dragon struck out at Cory first, swinging its large claws at him and leaving a superficial wound upon his side. The domestic feline hissed as his body was sent off in one direction, the herbs still clutched tightly in his maw as he did so. Blood trickled from the wounds as he stood, thanking the gods above it wasn’t deep. However, before he could even get to his feet, he heard her voice.

“CORY! You overgrown iguana, I’ll KILL YOU!”

With this, Rejectedlove lunged forward and clutched onto its tail. Digging her claws in as deep as she could, she held onto it and hissed and snarled as she chewed on his scales. The dragon grew irritated fast, flailing about with a burning rage in its eyes.

After a few moment, the dragon’s sporadic movements caused Rejectedlove to let go. As she did, she landed on her feet with a thud. She hissed, anger flooding her gaze as well as her body as she stood there, face to face with something potentially ten times her size.

“Come get me you bastard!”

Cory’s eyes widened as he heard this. Instantly, he knew it was about to go wrong.

“Rej! Rej no!” cried Corrupttimelines, scampering towards his sister as she fought against the enemy dragon. He towered over her, slamming her claws into her side as she screamed and wailed. Cory let out a fierce hiss, flinging mud into the dragon’s eyes as he flung himself forwards, latching into its nose and scraping his claws against his face. This caused the dragon to shift away, repulsed. It flung Cory a few feet away and let out a mighty roar, soaring off in the opposing direction. Cory’s body hit a nearby tree, causing him to collapse.

When he looked up, everything seemed surreal.

Her eyes twinkled with the light that peered through the abysmal clouds. Blood trickled heavy down her side as she fell, collapsing into the mud as she writhed in agony. Her golden hued fur, strikingly different against his own had dazzled in his eyes as a horrified look up took her face. She was sniffling and sobbing in agony. Swiftly, she dropped into the mud beneath her feet before his eyes. Her choking sobs wheezed into the sky as she made her plea.

“Cory! Please, help me! It hurts! It burns!”

Cory forced himself to his feet and went to work on her. First, he cleaned her wounds, but in the process Rejectedlove wouldn’t stop shifting in pain. Tears poured down her cheeks as he worked, trying to stop the blood with some fresh moss. It was of no use, though. No matter how hard he tried, the wound wouldn’t stop bleeding.

“I’m dying, aren’t I?” she asked, sniffling as she looked up at Cory. He froze, taken aback by her statement a she shook his head. “No, I just need to stop the bleeding and you’ll be fine…just give me some time-” he began, just before Rejectedlove cut him off. She smiled at him, tapping her nose to his paw.

“Stop. It’s okay….you did your best Cory. You…you did good.”

“Stop it, you’re not dying on me Rej…I won’t let you,” he grumbled as he kept trying to work, but Rejectedlove halted him, shaking her head.

“You will never be your namesake. Change the world…like you……we’re always……….meant……to.”

And that was when she took her final breath.

Cory shot up from his slumber, wheezing as his heart raced. His mind was whirling and he was overwhelmed quickly. Tears poured down his face as he began to hyperventilate, gasping for air as his claws dug into the earth. Everything was beginning to crash down upon him as he tried to ground himself, to no avail. What on earth was that?

Thunk!

The sound of something wooden hitting the floor rebounded through Aesior's achingly empty home. Harsh breaths followed the sound as it echoed a short while as the fallen object rattled until it came to a stop. "Shit ... shit ...", he struggled with his words, paw pressing to his chest as pain ricocheted through him.
For one, Corrupttimelines had returned right after the male had just accepted that he would never see him again. Second, there was no sign of Solsken after his collapse and Cory's return, his adopted son was effectively MIA. Third, he'd gone through one hell of a series of dreams and nightmares relating to his life and to his past. He'd been enlightened as to who the other soul he lived with was - and that within itself had been a revelation. Thedes. The former God of Death, a cannibal who wanted to see every God fall. A God he couldn't let free into the world again. A God he struggled to fight against, to keep under his influence.

Breaths shaking out into the air as the lion sat himself down, head spinning. What ... what was even happening? What all had happened during the week he was out? So much had happened already and he felt overwhelmed. He wanted to be back in his dreams, back in that field of lavender, back with his children when they were a few months old and running around being children. He wanted a reality he would not have for himself again.

Sitting there with head hanging and stomach acid burning at his throat, he felt his stomach snarl. Swallowing roughly, he pressed a paw to his gaunt stomach before it reached out, searching for the fallen object from earlier before finding its edge with his paw, eye closed. Drawing it towards himself, he would pry an eye open and stare at the mask held in his paws before lifting it up and sliding it over his face. It felt right, replacing his usual veil for the day. It hid his face, and it allowed his aching head some peace, the darkness heaven for his eyes.

Sitting there as he swept his tail over his paws, taking into account just what he could do. The first thing that came to mind was cleaning up his house, a small space that he could control. Huffing as he got to his paws, the lion would feel his way over to the window and open it, tail swishing as dust was disturbed and he sneezed. Cracking his good eye open, he peered through a slot in his mask for his gaze, humming softly to himself as he found a rag. Summoning some vines, he began to twist them this way and that, using his fine control over the plants to get them to move furniture in his way or to move dust rags around his immediate foot circumference. Pausing as he thought he heard a creak, lifting his mask with a pained hiss, "Who is there? And would you be opposed to helping me out with some cleaning?"

The serval hummed to herself, carrying a bag of items around town trying to find a quiet, safe place to make it. And after moments of scouring, she found just the right place -- next to Lucinder's house. It was almost as if by coincidence, or by fate. Maybe her mother would give her blessing. As she started to lay out the bones, sticks, and herbs, her mind wandered.

-----------------------------------

[i]"Mama, what are we?" the child asked, looking up at the serval. Her bright red fur contrasted that of the muted tones of her daughter, but their green eyes were the same. Gods, she told the little one. They were gods. "Does that mean I can shapeshift?" Not yet, but time would tell. There was always time. "Oh... well, I wanna grow up now! I wanna change forms!" In time, little Red. In time.

------------------------------------

"Alec, what's become of us?" He didn't know, but responded anyway. We've become powerful. "Oh. No, we've always been powerful. What are we?" The dark jackal was in thought. Lovers. The two were lovers. "Ah, you're right. I love you, Alec." I love you too, Red.

----------------------------

By the time she had come to her senses, the altar was finished. Three bones creating a teepee shape, with a skull under them and herbs wrapped around sticks, placed along the ground in an almost circular shape. She stared at it, her green eye awash with sadness. "Hopefully it suffices." She muttered. In time, little Red. In time.
