Hugo dared to say he had not been sufficiently scared to visit the Descendants despite their recent conflict with his own group, and if he hadn't been frightened of them then he was even less frightened of the Congregants of Genesis. He knew very little about them at all, in truth; they lived in the snow...? Maybe...? Living in snowlands seemed, well, not optimal, but who was Hugo to judge?

Actually, don't answer that. Hugo was a judgemental bitch.

The little mechanism at the border was intriguing. Hugo's sharp eyes had caught the thin wire fairly quickly, though he'd been close enough to have to come to a rather abrupt stop to avoid triggering whatever trap was laid out. He stared at it for a while. A long while, in fact. What did this do, then? Was a huge rock going to fall out of the trees and crush him if he triggered it? Would the ground open up beneath him? Would there be spikes at the bottom and he'd be impaled? No, he was being dramatic, that seemed more like an Emerald Isles tactic than a Congregants one.

He reached out a tentative paw, extending a claw to pull the wire back, and then let go. He watched the vibrations travel through, followed by the rather loud sound of metal objects clanging in the trees. It wasn't an unpleasant sound; there was a tune, if he listened. His ears twitched, a gleeful little smile curling at the corners of his maw, and he pulled the string again. And then again. And then again. Shimmying along to the tune all the while.

To be alone in the world was something Kaiser could have never imagined. He had never even thought about how to care for himself, how to plan for his future. The only thing that mattered was Maia's future, the little girl born from his parents five months after him. Shielding her from his father's wrath was his first priority, but both Mama and Papa had passed only a month after Maia was born. They weren't violent deaths, but they came so suddenly. A sickness had taken hold of Papa first, and within a week, he was gone. Days later, Mama followed, but Kaiser had already learned to not depend on his mother long ago. The one person he did look up to had left a few weeks after their parents' death, and Kaiser knew that his brother wasn't coming back. Friedrich dreamed of traveling the world one day, and left to fight for someone, some distant group that he couldn't remember the name of. Kaiser realized he couldn't stay where he was anymore, Maia needed to grow up somewhere better. To get out of the cold was a dream, but if they got strong enough, maybe they could make it out alive.

Only they never would. The same sickness that took their parents came for Maia, and her frail body succumbed to it only hours after she first started showing symptoms. Maia was the last person Kaiser had, losing her meant losing everything. He didn't have anywhere else to go, and now, he had nothing left to live for. It wasn't fair how everyone else had died and he was still here, but the sickness didn't come for him. The boy had never felt so hopeless in his life, out in the bitter cold. Mama and Papa had told stories of a civilization, a group who lived here in this environment. Kaiser had planned for both him and Maia to try to find them, but without Maia, he only walked around the forest aimlessly. He couldn't walk forever, he would fall to the cold and lack of energy eventually. Only then, could he see Maia again.

Lost in his own thoughts, he didn't even notice stepping over a wire, until wind chimes sounded all around him. Every inch of his body feared for his life, wanting to run away, but the kitten's little legs couldn't carry him any further. Beings further in the forest would be alerted of his presence, and his fate was for them to decide. Exhausted, the boy curled up by a tree, waiting for whoever was to come to him.
Seven caught herself humming a tune as she fumbled with the leather satchel, slipping its straps over her neck. A lot had happened, a lot of things. Word had caught that Montgomery requested aide from the Descendants in exchange for labor -- something that, frankly, Seven was happy to not be a part of. Her work was here, in familiar lands, walking familiar paths to find familiar herbs.
She pushed her way out of the barren space - she considered it more of a den than a house, since she had no need for pretty things, and arched her back in a long stretch. A blissful rumble left her as she started to meander toward one of the many paths around, only halting when she considered Montgomery's words at the meeting. That he would join her to help gather herbs. Would he still, or had the stress of the past weeks gotten to him? Perhaps he needed the rest, as all leaders do.

Tommy had somehow managed to convince his big brother to let him make this trip alone. Something about proving he could be responsible, he was still young, but he wasn't a puppy anymore. "Besides, we both know you would much rather stay here and not have to speak to anyone!"

It was nice to make the trip all by himself, if only a little boring because there was only so much he could think to talk about with himself. But not having the nagging older wolfdog on his tail was a breath of fresh air, and if he was lucky, he would actually be proving something and not just saying it to get away from his babysitter. As much as he loved his brother, getting yelled at for the things he found joy in just because they were "dangerous" got on his nerves. Duh, that's why he was doing it.

Of course, coming to the border of this cold place, he had no idea what to look for and wasn't the brightest crayon in the box. He tripped right over the tripwire, ears pinning back at the clanging of the windchimes as he tried to unwrap himself from the wires which only made the sound more cacophonous and loud. He felt like he might wake a sleeping dragon. He thrashed for another moment before pulling his paws free and jumping up, shaking himself off in attempt to act very, very natural as the sound subsided. "Oops!" At least he probably didn't need to make his arrival anymore noticeable than that.

The trip from the Descendants of the Departed was not a pleasant one, nor was it the easiest, even with the new stepping stones. The walk to and from had been brutal. Not to mention hot too. Clearly, Montgomery was not used to the heat and did not prefer it, as the heat mixed with the humidity caused his curly fur to puff up as he approached their border near the River of Life. Rather than walking further, he let his paw intentionally trigger the tripwire. The windchimes clashed above his head as he sat down onto the ground. Someone would come eventually. Until then, he would wait patiently and let his thoughts run wild.

Lucia had always spoke of a lion named 'Meteor,' but the archon had never put a name to a face until now. He had always kept Valerius and the Descendants of the Departed at a distance for a reason. The former pharaoh, despite his donated rations, had shot thinly veiled threats towards the congregants. Lucia's stories about this 'Meteor' did not help either. Needless to say, they were far from his favorite. To discover that Valerius was dead and that Meteor had replaced him came as a surprise though. He could deal with Valerius' pettiness from afar, but knowing Meteor had wronged his love would rub him the wrong way... and it already was.

The canine was clearly frustrated as he sat there in silence. His brow was furrowed and his mouth was pulled back into a firm frown. He needed to figure out who to send to the Descendants of the Departed for assistance, but his list was growing short. Upon request, he could not send Seven. To him, Lucia could not go either, even if she was capable. He would not let her endure Meteor's presence. Montgomery hoped she would not fight him on that, but he could not be too sure. That is what scared him.

Just like when he had left, the fur on his nape was standing up, except it was more visible now. Anyone who would approach would be able to tell. Whether he would hide his struggle upon their arrival was debatable.

All it took was one time for Mae to hear that there were fireflies somewhere in this joint and she had decided to make it her life's mission to stay up until they appeared so she could catch one. She had made a terrible error in coming to this frosty place. There was a stark lack of insects. Insects and arachnids were Mae's only friends these days and she was missing them. Mae had yet to see a moth of any kind and trust, she had looked. It felt empty without the moths. Sure, the man who had raised her was off doing who knows what who knows where, but that didn't matter. Mae could handle it.
So what if she had gotten lost on a walk and no one had bothered to look very hard for her? She wasn't upset. Not in the slightest.
The juvenile fox's tail swished back and forth in the snow, her wings buzzing angrily as she stared at the clearing she had been hiding in the bushes around. The blinks of light flashed around the edges when her wings buzzed, the fireflies zooming in all directions away from the noise.
No part of her was irrationally angry about the fact that she was stuck in this stupid snow hut unless she decided to go out and look for him. Her real parents weren't here to tell her any different, so who was Mister Project to tell her anything anyway? Screw that guy, he hadn't even looked for her good enough.
Focusing again on the fireflies, Mae squinted her foggy eyes. The light emitting from them kind of... really hurt. Narrowing her eyes to slits, Mae lunged and swatted an unsuspecting insect out of the sky, kidnapping it from its little insect family, under her paw. Mae lifted her paw enough to find the insect underneath and bent to analyze it in the low light of the moon going in and out of the cloud cover. "You're my new best friend." Mae announced to the insect, presumably much to its dismay.

An hour before sunset, the cabbit sludged through the shallows of the River of Life. With every step closer to the shore, Lucia’s paws took on more body weight, more strain. So, too, did the weight of the half-full net secured to a strap across her waist. Pebbles shifted below her paws and threatened to unbalance her.

Her teeth chattered. Water dripped from her whiskers. Her waterproof coat protected her from the worst of hypothermia, but she was not adapted to this cold climate. She’d grown up on a tropical island and while her mutations allowed her to thrive in the water, she couldn’t spend too much time in the frigid waters.

Lucia’s rear paws left the water. As she walked towards her home, she shook out each paw one by one. Her teeth still chattered. Her pawpads and nose had long since gone numb from the river’s chill. Now came the worst of the pinpricks of returning bloodflow.

By Requiem and Vayu (no, by Neandryne), Lucia wished the worst of her pain was the bloodflow returning to her nose. She sneezed. That jerk of the head flung the rest of the water off her coat.

She should be grateful. She was grateful. Yesterday, her abdomen had burned with agony both razor sharp and bone crushing. She hadn’t been able to leave her home, nevermind go for her morning swim. That had worried Monty. But failing to go for a swim this morning? That had alarmed him. She hated seeing him like that, hated knowing she caused those feelings in him. Gods (no, God), why couldn’t her body let her live?

Lucia continued walking. The net containing freshwater clams and mussels dragged behind her.

Now she was out of the river, the dull agony in her abdomen returned. Bloodflow? Or the cold soothed the inflammation? She bit her lip, but kept walking.

Right before the meeting, Monty had given her medicine for the pain. She’d taken half. Maybe if she’d taken the full dose, she would have a full net of food for everyone. But, no, pain wasn’t reasonable like that. A full dose today? She’d take a full dose the next time the pain climbed this high. How long until she needed such a dose that it clouded her mind, prevented her from swimming? The pain had started as nothing more than an increase of menstruation agony. Was yesterday her new maximum pain day? Or was yesterday going to be the new normal in six months? Was this pain noise to overcome or a signal of her impending death?

Lucia focused on the crunching snow beneath her paws. The texture of the cold against her complaining paw pads. The smell of the sharp cold signaling tomorrow would be frigid.

Monty would be waiting for her. If the pain returned tomorrow, he’d be there to help. If the pain wasn’t there? Nobody would be happier than him—not even her—and, by Requiem’s grace and Vayu’s mercy, he would be happy because she wasn’t in pain.

Everyone else, Lucia thought, considered her pain days an inconvenience to their dinner plans.

Time.

So much time had passed.

The animals were beginning to notice too.

Montgomery Scarborough, archon of the Congregants of Genesis, had his eyes on the problems many months ago, but had never made them aware. In fact, the leader had tried his best to provide his assistant and tie up loose ends where he could, but it was never enough. Their food stashed away in ice was beginning to dwindle and congregants no longer had their pick of a vast cuisine, instead getting rations coordinated by those in charge. Herbs were no longer in the general public's reach too. The sick were beginning to get sicker and decisions had to be made. Do they prioritize the young and healthy or the elderly and chronically ill? Montgomery was left to decide.

Some were beginning to lose their faith and scold Montgomery. They noticed that the canine was a hypocrite. While he prioritized the healthy, he still stashed some herbs away for his chronically ill lover, Lucia. He always said he needed her to keep himself afloat, but what about the rest of them? Why was he a priority, unlike their friends and family? For that, they were reasonably harsh. To say that he did nothing in regards to food though, that was unfair. The archon was doing his best pleading nearby groups for anything they could spare, even if he had to risk his reputation and dignity for it. After all, there was a reason he brought no congregants on his adventures. They did not need to see him at his lowest.

Others were still praying to Neandryne, hoping better times would come. Their utmost faith in the God of Change led them to believe that this was the end of an era, bringing forth another of prosperity. Montgomery envied their faith. He wanted their God to save them and relieve him of the pressure that had been weighing him down for quite some time, but how long did he have to wait? With Neandryne not showing their face for many years, he could only hope soon. In the meantime, Montgomery's own beliefs were beginning to fade.

With his paws shaky and glasses beginning to slide off his face, Montgomery stood at the front of the temple staring at the wall of incarnations. His dark gaze scanned the many faces of Neandryne's variations as if he was trying to find an answer in their pointed expressions, but he soon let his head fall into his neck. He closed his eyes and a singular tear streamed down his cheek. The archon's paw raised to his face and softly caressed it away before anyone wandered in behind him as he called for a meeting after dawn.

Montgomery rubbed the back of his paw against his ceremonial pelt before turning to face the rest of the temple. Moments later, the first of the congregants started to file in. He anxiously surveyed the crowd for any disappointed looks or furrowed brows, but found none. A sigh left him. Maybe this would be a better meeting than the rest. Just maybe.

The majority did not take long to follow. A few stragglers always came late, but Montgomery did not mind. As long as they showed up to prove their loyalty in Neandryne's eyes, that was what was important. Those who chose not to come were what irked him. The music that had once led them into service was now gone. Many were choosing to stay home lately, while others had made their way to an early grave. Ultimately, there weren't many familiar faces, along with no new ones. Montgomery tried to blame their God for their lack of attendance, but only found himself blaming the archon... which happened to be him.

With a final look over the small crowd, the canine affirmed that this was the last of the crowd whether he liked it or not. "Thank you for coming today," he murmured to break the silence. "I will take anyone I can get." Montgomery offered a half-hearted smile in an attempt to raise their spirits. Most of the crowd did not seem to react and remained unempathetic.

He nervously swallowed. "I want to acknowledge a few things today. We, as the Congregants of Genesis, have been struggling... and I need everyone to pitch in." This request has been made many times over the past few months, but not everyone listened. Ironically, those who did not lend a paw were those who often complained, but he always tried to be sympathetic and push them towards a better place. "Our food is low and the medicinal supplies are not going to last much longer..." His gaze momentarily averted their own, trying not to see their reaction, but he still heard their whispers. They were hard to ignore, even if he could not make out the words they spoke. Montgomery just assumed they were negative at this point.

Eventually, he looked back. "I am going to try and go out to the other groups again for reinforcements soon, but I need us to pick up the pace here too, okay?" the canine pleaded. "If you're w-"

"Will you be stepping it up too?"

The dog avoided the question, despite the audience clearly noticing his expression souring at it. He tried to continue speaking, but chaos started to spread among the audience. Questions and accusations were shot towards Montgomery, whether shouted, spoken, or whispered.

"I'm leaving."

"I can't imagine moving a paw till I feel better... and how do you expect to fix that?"

"How long until we don't have to take handouts from the other groups?"

"ENOUGH!"

Montgomery suddenly rose to all four paws and stood firm at the front. "What will arguing do besides tear us down further?" he growled. "If you do not believe in my or Neandryne's plan, then leave. It'll be one less mouth to feed." His firmness did not stop the entire crowd with a 'Or die, like the unlucky' being heard near the front. Some animals just did not know how to whisper. He chose to pretend to not hear it, but it was already weighing down upon him internally just like the rest of their comments.

Instead, he persisted. "If you attend today, you're getting an assignment. No ifs, ands, or buts." As expected, there was some protest. "Those who step up first will get the light duty, so I expect to see some faces coming up to the front." He tapped his claws lightly against the marble beneath his feet. The archon was lying, of course. Montgomery was not hard-headed enough to purposefully torture the weak, but he had exhausted his pleasantries. Only commands worked as of late, especially ones with incentive. He was even beginning to wonder if dishing out promotions or extra rations would work better, but had yet to try. He was not that desperate yet.

Congregants of Genesis is a religious group that focuses on worshipping Neandryne, the God of change, while living in a boreal forest that is surrounded by cold, snowy conditions and dangerous glacier cliff that drop into a dangerous ocean.

HISTORY

For many years, Congregants of Genesis have worshipped Neandryne, the God of change. They have slaved away at pleasing them and their many incarnations throughout many generations. As of recent though, their God's latest incarnation hasn't shown up, leading them to believe the previous incarnation has passed. Even so, as time goes on, the group worries. When will their God show their face once again?

Under the lead of Montgomery Scarborough, the archon is determined to make things right and bring their God back to the Congregants of Genesis. Desperate times may call for desperate measures.

TERRITORY

Congregants of Genesis stays within a boreal forest near the southern edge of their land, but are surrounded by a sparse taiga and spanning tundras.
FIREFLY GUIDES — Fireflies are often seen at night while wandering the territory. They will often lead members back to their homestead or landmarks, but flee at the feeling of danger, leaving their ally in the dark. All congregants are advised to know their way around before wandering off alone due to this.

THE BORDER — The edge of the forest is lined with tripwire. That wire leads up to hidden windchimes up in the trees. Upon triggering the tripwire, those windchimes clash together to create a melody of metal. This acts as a doorbell or a warning to congregants around the territory. Depending on the situation, they will either approach to greet their visitor or flee to the colder parts of the territory.

THE SERPENT MOUND — In the middle of the forest lies an entangled mound known as the 'serpent mound.' The serpent mound is believed to be an ouroboros snake protecting the five key parts of the territory from destruction. The group believes these five sectors lead to a fulfilling life with religion being the most prominent. As such, the crevices between the mounds are split into five parts with a religion being in the middle.

RELIGION — In the center of the ouroboros lies the sector for religion. While it is the smallest area out of the five, it is the most important. This is where congregants worship Neandryne and come together for meetings. A marble sanctuary is home to all. While the decorations change per season, the snake sculptures that wrap around the marble columns remain. Inside, it is dark due to a lack of windows, so the walls are lined with torches to provide light and warmth. There are also no seats, allowing all sizes to gather in the hall for worship and meetings. The front of the room does have a short set of stairs leading up to a raised platform for the leader to speak on. As the archon speaks, sculptures of Neandryne's many incarnations line the back wall. Congregants of Genesis are invited to pray to these sculptures in times of need and are welcome to decorate them with offerings if they are celebrating, grieving, or are in need of a blessing.

HEALTH — Anyone who needs to visit the harbinger and their acolytes for medical attention should head to this area. They have their own building, similar to the housing seen around camp, and a stock of medical supplies for catering to the injured, along with beds for those who need time to heal. Two other buildings connected through a passageway are dedicated to nursing mothers and elders who need constant care.

TOGETHERNESS — Any and all events should be held in this sector. Many congregants will gather in this area for stargazing due to the lack of trees here that lead to an open sky. There are no set buildings in this portion, leaving the field open to be changed and molded to the exemplar's vision.

INDULGENCE — The indulgence sector is where all essential supplies are stored, such as food and water. Food that expires quickly is often buried and stored in the snow for safe keeping. Congregants are also welcome to set up shops in this area to sell goods and services.

DEDICATION — Passionate members come here for all sorts of training. The tall trees provide cover for heavy physical activity, but is not always the best for prepping a member's mental skills with a book. Even so, this open area with sections dedicated to certain areas of study is open to all. Congregants are encouraged to be students, as well as mentors to anyone looking to learn. There is even a small home dedicated to keeping books away from the forces of nature.

The legate and cavaliers will often be in this area, as they store their weaponry, defenses, and tactical maps in a cave that lies inside the mound. This cave's entrance is hidden by bushes and is only known to current (or former) members of Congregants of Genesis.

HOUSING — The cold temperature of the group leads to a complicated housing situation. All homes need to be properly insulated to keep congregants warm. As a result, the group tends to live in semi subterranean homes that are partially underground. First, a hole is dug into the ground to provide ground insulation and structure. The edges of the hole are used to build the walls that are lined with wood, furs, and any type of wind break they can find that'll keep the wind out and heat in. From there, a passage is dug from the ground to the outside to form an entrance/exit to the home that'll keep out the cold. Some homes also provide a vent for smoke if they have a fireplace.

As for the inside, it is up to the homeowner. Even with the home's insulation, many congregants choose to have pelts in their home to use for bedding and blankets anyways, especially for children and elders. It is also common to store valuables within their homes, especially hidden within a hole in the ground to protect from raiders.

THE GLACIER CLIFFS — Past the forest and into the cold lies the other end of the territory. This side abruptly ends, forming snowy, glacier cliffs. The blue ocean lies below. In some areas, sharp rocks may be hidden underneath the water or patches of ice may congregate below. It is advised to avoid jumping off these cliffs due to the mystery of what lies underneath the surface and the inability to recover from the cold waters.

RIVER OF LIFE — One side of the border is protected by the River of Life. Currently, this river is simply way to transport goods across the territory quickly without straining themselves. It also ends at a waterfall known as The Tears of Neandryne.
The waterfall lies at the end of the river and leads into the ocean. Occasionally, the waterfall turns a bright red color due to the ferrous iron that combines with the cold, atmospheric air. The group takes this as a sign of warning or anger from Neandryne and may even lead to the dead or sacrifices being dumped down the waterfall to be disposed of.
The adaptation and betterment of all animals that follow them, within or outside of the group, is priority. Not only this, but the passage of time. How their followers and the world around them progresses through time is an important aspect to their worship. It is believed that when a soul dies, it does not go to the afterlife. Instead, the soul is reincarnated. The soul can be reincarnated into a new body or, if they reach peak spirituality, they may be able to possess a horseshoe crab. With each reincarnation, the soul should be closer to ascension,
Neandryne does not have a singular form. Instead, they have incarnations. Each incarnation has a snake pattern wrapping up their back left leg, similar to the high rank's scarification and the snakes that wrap around the sanctuary's columns.

— Watching the blue transition into and out of it's full state
— Taking a ceremonial dip into the cold, ocean waters that shocks the system and refreshes the soul
— Throwing old, sentimental trinkets off the cliff that represent leaving that of toxicity period behind
— Cleaning the entire territory, usually assigned in sections
— Re-teaching essential skills to adult congregants, such as hunting or fighting
— Re-establishing dedication to Neandryne through a period of worship
— High ranks will wear their ceremonial pelts throughout the festival
NEANDRYNE'S PUNISHMENT — Members or enemies who are too neutral to be killed outright are given the chance to pursue Neandryne's Punishment. The individual is brought to a large, slanted boulder near the edge of the cliffs and chained down to it’s surface during dusk. Overnight, their fate is left to Neandryne. In front of friends and family, the shape of the serpent mound will be drawn on with a hot iron rod. High ranks who deny this ceremony are seen as lesser and not as dedicated as their peers. Removal of this marking is also seen as betraying Neandryne and Congregants of Genesis and may lead to punishment.

HORSESHOE CRABS — Out of respect, Congregants of Genesis do not hunt the abundance of horseshoe crabs that live nearby. Horseshoe crabs are ascended creatures. Their species has been through centuries of life and have adapted to their living conditions throughout the way. They 'change' through molting, shedding their exoskeleton and becoming a new, larger creature afterwards. These crabs also have an unusual blue tone to their blood, leading congregants to think they are holy creatures. On the rare occasion, with permission from Neandryne and the archon, some horseshoe crabs will be culled for religious events due to their rumored healing properties.

VIEW ON MUTATIONS — The land they lived on was not always full of mutated animals. Over time, the inhabitants of the territory gained horns, scales, gills, and more. Mutations are often seen as a blessing from Neandryne and praised as superior. The God welcomed this change, as did the congregants of the group. Due to this, Congregants of Genesis have a very positive outlook on animals who have these new additions.

SCARIFICATION CEREMONY OF HIGH RANKS — To prove their dedication to Neandryne, all high ranks in the Congregants of Genesis are invited to be branded on the bottom of their back, left foot (or, if preferred, a place of their choosing).
