" my own illusion come to be "

the golden dragon had recently returned from the pitt and had went to find their adoptive sibling. their blood ran cold when they realized that he was nowhere to be found in the vicinity of the territory and they could not find his scent.

they had arrived at his den in a rush for the second time, panic clawing their throat as they breathed out, eyes scanning the building. eyes landing on a few pieces of paper, they felt their heart stop in their chest, breath catching. swooping up the paper, they began to read, feeling sicker and sicker as they read it.

it wasn't a ransom note, it was a bunch of papers from asteri, stating that he was leaving the rosebloods because it was not the type of place he fitted into, and that he didn't feel safe there even with them to protect him. he was much too small and the group just wasn't his style. the only clue that bai shi received as to where he was headed, was, 'water'.

letting the paper fall, they felt pain erupt in their chest and their throat tighten. tears would spill, leaving them shaking in their misery and loss. it was rather evident he didn't want them to follow or search him out, why would he have left the letter for them if not?

if one knew the dragon well, they would know that the dragon had incredible separation anxiety and intensified fears of abandonment. not to mention how much they loved and felt for him, raised side by side. to be honest, their coronation would have been the last they had seen of him. the entirety of the letter summed up to 'I'm leaving, don't follow me, I'm leaving the family and you, I don't feel the same, goodbye.' or rather, that's how it felt like at least. it was like a breakup but, also a distinct declaration of independence.

so they lay in his empty den, drawing in the scent of his former home, trying to soothe their heartache the best they could.
