GUIDE TO CONTRACTS & CHAINS
( This is moreso for myself, whenever Akuma gets a contractor. A majority of this is from the wiki, though I only took what was important and applied to Akuma. )

"For a Baskerville, Chains are not mere weapons but comrades in arms, with whom we exchange blood as equals, and equally share our destiny."

— "Chain" is a term given to those who reside in the Abyss (the Abyss, in general, is a central power source for every other dimension within the dimensional plane.) A Chain is created when something drops into the Abyss, though anything dropped into the Abyss can become a Chain, the process of becoming a Chain differs from those who have a defined conscious and those who don't. For those who enter the Abyss with an already defined conscious, they will absorb the power of the Abyss to the point of saturation, resulting in the mutation of their bodies, becoming misshapen and monstrous. If one's will is strong enough, it will retain the personality it once had, albeit slightly altered by their newfound immense hunger and lust for power. However, they will not be considered by the Abyss to be a part of The Rule of 100 Cycles and so when a Chain dies, their existence will fade completely since they are not welcomed to be reborn after 100 cycles.

Chains themselves lack the ability to leave the Abyss on their own and as such must form a contract or wait until for a disruption in the Way so they can escape into the 1st dimension. However, a Chain's existence is unstable and as such a Chain cannot exist within the 1st dimension without a contractor to stabilize their existence.

Chains form contracts through the exchange of blood (how they accomplish this does not matter) between a contractor and its Chain, however doing so without being a member of the Baskerville Clan, who are chosen as messengers of the Abyss, receive an Incuse with a time limit that allows the contractor only twelve uses of their Chain's powers. With each rotation of the Incuse, an "Illegal contractor" will feel immense pain as a burden of the Chain's power. The closer to the 12th rotation, the more primal and Chain-like the contractor becomes. When the Incuse reaches its 12th rotation, both the contractor and the Chain are plunged into the Abyss where the contractor will eventually mutate into a Chain themselves. Carceres are the only known loophole to this state of order, as a Carcere will take in the Chain's blood instead, resulting for the Baskerville Incuse to appear on the Carcere. Though the Carcere is truthfully the safer method of forming a contract with a Chain, doing so will severely limit the amount of power the Chain is to use.
