Taking joy like referenced in We Happy Few is a pill of dopamine, which gives Essie a sense of false or rather has his name implies escaped reality, where he forgets his problems, and lives a blissful drug enforced life. ( also a slave concept now that I really think about it...? hm)
Basically someone to either supply the 'joy' or shove it down his throat.
