HOMESICK AT SPACE CAMP ; summer camp au, open - Suiteheart - 07-13-2018

SUITE
HEART
Well, it was that time again for the annual Ascendants Summer Camp. It was four weeks of arts and crafts, games, swimming, movies, stars, campfires, and cabins. In all honesty, it was Shay's (better known by her camp nickname of Suite) favorite summer activity. She loved getting to hang out with other camp counselors - they were always loads of fun. Admittedly, she loved the kiddos too, even if they were sometimes a handful.

Today was the first day of camp. All the kids had arrived a few hours ago, and now that they were settled and given their team colors in the form of bandannas, it was time for the fun to begin. Suite was wearing a deep red bandanna as a headband. Red was her team: the best team. They were going to kickass in the longboat race this year! They had won in the past, and they were going to defend their title. Plus, Shay had been talking mad shit to the other counselors about it from the moment they had arrived.

"Alright, kiddos! Time for longboat races!" she called into the megaphone, and immediately, the campers began to scramble towards the water. "Grab a life jacket on the way!" She watched as each kid politely stopped to be outfitted with a preserver. She was glad they were being somewhat well behaved this year (she wasn't going to hold her breath; it was the only the first day).

Almost at once, some of the children began to splash around in the water, too impatient to wait for everyone. Shay let them. Besides, it would be a minute before the teams had gathered together.

"Okay, everyone separate into your teams. Green Team gets first boat. Blue Team gets second boat. Red Team gets third boat. Yellow Team gets fourth boat." The blonde woman stepped up beside her boat and began helping her teammates climb aboard. In a few moments, the race would begin, and she couldn't wait to destroy the others with her amazing team.

[lmao this post is all over the place but basically decide if you want y/c to be a camp counselor or a camper!! the different teams are doing longboat races, and the winners get bragging rights for all time. have fun and go wild because the races are starting soon]

MAKE ME QUEEN OR
I'LL MAKE YOU BLEED
[b]"Do we get first boat because we're the best?"

Margaery's question, though posed innocently, was laced with a certain cockiness that she did not often portray. Shay might have been undefeated, but this year... this year Green Team was coming out on top. Her own jade green bandanna was tied into a pretty bow around her ponytail, a grin dancing wildly upon her pale face as she gazed at her girlfriend. From campers to camp counselors, a lot had changed. What hadn't was her fierce desire to win, and she hoped that Shay knew that.

Red team was going down.

Margaery crossed her arms over her chest, watching eagerly as her little campers made their presences known. She wondered who she got this year, excited to finally meet them all. She wouldn't lie: she hardly waited patiently each year for this camp. Nik and Caroline had been sending her since she was a little girl and rather quickly, it had become one of her favorite things ever... right after Shay of course.

"Hate to break it to you, love, but my team is going to emerge on top this year. You've had too many victories already- someone needs to humble you!"

[align=center][div style="width: 51%; text-align: justify; font-size: 10pt; letter-spacing: -1px; font-family: georgia;"]While Marg and Suite argued over who would win, Leonard was certain that the Blue team would win this time. This was his first time being here at summer camp, and he was happy to be here, as he had begged his parents to let him go for a while now. Finally they agreed, though it was only because they were having marriage problems and they didn't want to deal with their son that summer while they sorted things out. It wasn't the best situation, and while he was a bit sad and bitter over that, he was still pleased to finally be here. Even though he was a bit shy and stand-offish from the other kids.

It took him a mental pep talk to finally walk up and get his life-jacket, but once he did, he quickly set to strapping it around himself. It took him a brief moment to figure it out, and he was getting irritated, but he inevitably got it and smirked in triumph. With it around him, he joined the other children in their team's boat, trying not to tip it over.

He always loved to be in the water, even if it was on a boat. He had liked to swim since he was young, and even though this wasn't quite the way he would have liked, he knew they'd probably let them actually swim later. That's what they did in summer camp, anyway, right? He wasn't sure, but he did know it was basically like one big camping trip with a bunch of stuff to do.

Alex winced ever so slightly as the long boat he was in rocked slightly, sitting quietly and watching the other kids and the camp counselors playfully bicker with each other about winning. He tapped his knees, more or less a nervous tick. He wasn't what one would call social, he was more an antisocial kind of child. Too quiet and nervous to make friends, and the yelling that naturally came with people having fun put him off and unnerved him too much to allow him to integrate. No one had seemed to have a problem with it, it wasn't as if what he didn't say really affected anyone.

He fiddled with his bandanna for a minute, mimicking Shay and tying it around his head as a headband, convinced if he had kept it on his arm like he'd originally planned, it would fall off. Color green, Green Team.

Maybe it was kind of ironic that Michael was on Red Team. .. Okay, in context it was very, very ironic. But that context didn't really exist here, so it really wasn't. As it was, the kid was just disappointed that he wasn't on the same team as Leonard. As in, staring blankly at his bandanna in disappointment. Absolutely crushed. Heartbroken. Wasn't on the same team as his bestest friend. (read: the kid he just wouldn't leave alone) .. The only reason the curly-haired child was remotely okay with this was 'cause Shay was leading the team. He liked Shay. She was really really nice. Still, Michael was still pretty upset. Pouting.
Despite this, though, he doesn't protest. Not verbally at least. I mean, he was pretty obvious about it in general. He was even .. trying .. to get ready on his own. It wasn't going great. He missed his sisters. They would've helped him. So, yeah, it takes a little while. It tries to tie the bandanna around his neck but that doesn't work, and then he realizes he doesn't know how to tie it at all. Which is kind of to be expected. Michael didn't even know how to tie his own shoes. So in the end he kind of just .. haphazardly shoves it into his shirt collar. It works, at least. And so, Michael begins basically waddling over to the boats, and only remembers the Life Jacket partway through. .. He shrugs it on, but he certainly doesn't put it on right. He doesn't seem to notice, though, more content to plop into the boat with Shay 'till it starts. Even if he's still sulky about the whole thing.

SING, GODDESS, OF THE RAGE OF ACHILLES
Bastille, naturally, was not really here by choice. Margy had mentioned in an off-hand (read as: entirely deliberate) fashion that the camp needed more counselors that year, and low and behold, here he was. He'd put up a fairly weak fight, knowing there was no point in arguing with Cecily once she got it in her head that this was good, proper thing for him to do. A few days in, he'd relaxed a little bit, and the competitions helped. Particularly when it meant trying to destroy Margy via small campers for landing him here.

"Hey, Leo," he greeted as he sauntered up to the front of the second boat, Blue boat. He was convinced Margy had assigned him Blue to match his eyes, which was just... ridiculous, frankly, but he could only silently thank her for not sticking him in the same group as Hazel. He opted for a blue t-shirt today as opposed to the bandana, and he glanced towards the other boats before smirking slightly. "Ready to sink some losers?"

[align=center][div style="0px; width:450px; height:auto; text-align: justify; font-size: 8pt; line-height:13px; color:black;"]Camping was fun or rather it would be fun if she could stop being so competitive. But that was what camping was all about right. Summer camp had all of these competitions and different teams and all of that mess. Though they tried to make it seem like everyone won in the end at the finally closings and what not they all knew that only one team came out on top. Her gaze was settled on nothing in particular as she listened to the campers that were coming in. It wasn't like she was upset or anything but she was honestly starting to doubt her counselor's judgement for putting her on Team Yellow. Like, some of them were good but they hadn't been winning anything all summer. It was annoying to say the least but the red head decided not to make a bit deal about it. Standing up the female would pull her hair into a ponytail, eyes scanning over the growing crowd before she stepped lightly toward the fourth boat that was designated for her team. Hopefully more would show up and she glanced at Micheal before waving in his direction just lightly. To her he was alright and though he talked about stuff so oddly she didn't blame him for it. "Just to let you know, I'm going to crush your team this time." Trash talk was okay and she gave a small smirk before setting her eyes back on the water again. Blue team was going to be a hard fought battle for sure and she looked over to see Church and the other kid who seemed to irk her nerves but hopefully Bastille didn't notice her mean mugging him from across the way.

[align=center][div style="width: 51%; text-align: justify; font-size: 10pt; letter-spacing: -1px; font-family: georgia;"]Leonard wasn't too sure about Michael. They had just met the first day of camp, and yet the other kid had already latched onto him, acting as if they had been good buddies for forever. It annoyed him to no end, and yet he also sort of liked it. He had a tendency to catch the attention of unfriendly older kids, so to have someone take a liking to him so quickly felt really nice. Plus it put him at ease to know he wouldn't be sitting alone when eating or for partner activities.

The boy lifts his head as Bast, the team's leader comes over, a grin breaking out on his face. He quickly nods to the older male, throwing a fist up into the air. "Yeah! We'll win this time for sure!" he says, though it isn't quite as loud as he would have liked. Rather it was spoken in a slightly louder tone than usual. He didn't want to attract too much attention, but he did want to show his enthusiasm.

He turns at the next voice, his child-like wonder disappearing at Carolina's words. She was one of the kids he had taken a quick disliking to. The black-haired boy scrunched up his nose as if he had just smelled something rancid, shaking his head at her words. "Nuh-uh! Blue Team is gonna win for sure," he protests, grabbing fistfuls of his life jacket.

Re: HOMESICK AT SPACE CAMP ; summer camp au, open - ★ HAZEL - 07-15-2018

i never had nobody touch me like i'm glass
(This is such a cute au oh my goD)

Hazel almost always had an excuse as to why she devoted four weeks of her summer to heat and sweaty, yelling children while miles away from the nearest gas station. They were generally lame excuses, but...anything to cover up that she was doing whatever she could to get away from her home life until she left for college. Very few people knew, and she made sure none of her kids got anywhere close to her bandana. Especially Parker, the nosy brat. God knows she loved him to death with that mop of brown hair and overbite, but his attitude and tendency to try and yank her bandana off her arm had made for some not-so-nice conversations.

Despite her general anxiety over the kids finding out, Hazel actually loved it at camp. She loved the wide open space, the clean air, the feeling of exhaustion that sank into your bones at the end of the day. She loved hearing the kids laugh and loved getting up at seven every morning to watch the sun rise and see the mist settle into dew on the grass. Even staying up late to braid the girls’ hair and tell them stories of boys and high school was something she found joy in. But most of all, she loved that the camp had allowed her to board her horse in the stables while she stayed. Arion was too young and wild to have the campers ride, but Hazel would ride him very early in the morning or late at night. On occasion, when he wouldn’t shut up, Hazel would exchange chores with other counselors to go for a ride. If someone watched her kids, she’d clean up after dinner.

Besides, Hazel was either wherever her campers were or at the stables. On riding day, she was particularly giddy, always stirring the kids into a tizzy with the thought of getting on the back of a horse. “It’s like flying!” She’d say, “The wind in your hair and the grass blurring around you and you feel invincible.” Of course, she’d forget that the kids were too young and inexperienced to go out on their own, but for the braver ones she’d clip them to a lunge line and have the horse canter a few circles.

That was Hazel’s favorite camp activity. Her least favorite?

Water.

Anything water-related. Anything that involved setting foot in the massive lake was an immediate out for her. Unlike her other fears, Hazel’s terror of water was...irrational. She had no traumatic experience as a child, nor any sort of reason to fear it. She just...didn’t like deep water. Which meant Hazel was the one handing out life jackets, helping each kid to zip it up and buckle them all safely. Another counselor had already agreed to take her campers on the water, which meant another swap of chores. (At this point Hazel knew all the employees in the kitchens and their entire extended families.)

“Are you sure you don’t want to swim with us?” Ella whined, small fists shoving at her life jacket buckles. “Don’t you like us?” She pouted, mousey brown hair still in a rat’s nest from last night’s sleep. Hazel laughed, taking the buckles from the first grader and clicking them together.

“Of course I like you guys.” She assured the girl, ruffling her hair. “You’re my kids. You’re the best kids out of them all. I just don’t like the water.” Ella frowned, thinking, and suddenly there was an uproar of questions from the line of children. Mostly her own.

“So you don’t like taking showers?”

“Are you afraid of drinking water?”

“Princess doesn’t like water!”

Hazel sighed, knowing that Parker was eagerly and gleefully using her camp name (which, by the way, was not her choice — Bastille used it as a tease and the kids overheard and unfortunately...it stuck). He wasn’t even asking a question, he was just mocking her. Leveling a glare at him, she pointed, squinting. “Don’t make me put you outside tonight, Parker,” She threatened.

When all the kids were in the water, Hazel leaned back, praying to god none of them drowned. She glanced at the other counselors, gaze lingering on Bastille before trailing back to the kids, keeping an eye on them while she pulled what hair she could reach over her shoulder to braid.

Shay snorted at Margaery's words. "Haven't you heard the saying, babe? First's the worst?" She couldn't remember how the rest of the dictum flowed, but she didn't much care. She had succeeded in making sure her lover knew the Green Team was going down. "And I wouldn't hold my breath. Red Team smoked everyone last year. We're here to win again." The blonde woman turned towards her tiny squaddron of children, and they all hooped and hollered in agreement.

She waves a hello to Leonard, happy to see him ready to go. He was on Blue Team - Bastille's team. She grinned just a bit and hoped he wouldn't be too crushed by the loss.

She watched Alexander mimic her actions with his own bandanna, and her smile grew. "Now we're talking, Xander!" she said, giving him a big thumbs up. He had seemed a tad bit shy from the moment he landed in the Ascendants Summer Camp program, and Shay was determined to help break him out of his shell before the camp was over with. She was about to say more when Michael climbed aboard, and she chuckled a bit. "C'mere, Michael, lemme help you," she said, maneuvering gently around in the longboat to get to this curly-haired kiddo. She then moved to fix his life jacket. "Need me to tie your bandanna around your head so it won't fall off out of your shirt?"

She waved to Bastille and Carolina as the entered the fray, and she laughed at both of their comments (and Leo's). There was no way Blue Team or Yellow Team was winning. They didn't have the best campers like Red Team did. "It's so sad that you guys think you're winning this year. Red Team won last year, and we're keeping our title." Her tone was laced with joy though; she was really happy to be competing in all of this.

She waved to Hazel, beaming brightly. She knew her friend probably wouldn't be participating in this activity, but that was okay. Besides, someone needed to cheer for Red Team from the sidelines (even if Haze wasn't on her team). And they needed someone to watch the kids that weren't so keen on boat racing. "Haze! Cheer for Red Team!"
