rosemary was born in a coven of witches related exclusively by blood - her mother, grandmother, aunts, and various other relatives were part of this group. all of them were talented in the manner of "magic" and healing, with anyone who didn't have an interest naturally leaving the coven after they were old enough to leave. rosemary doesn't quite know what to do with male relatives, though, because her family doesn't bear male sons - once they find out they're pregnant, her family members perform several rituals meant to bestow the growing children with magical powers and kill the sons. the coven believed that males of their bloodline were inherently unstable, which is saying something considering how nearly all of them suffered from genetic mental illness.

in this kind of environment, it was very easy for rosemary to learn from her family members how to control her abilities - because, to them, her magic was normal. rosemary's mother, herself, was exceptionally powerful, but also suffered from worse symptoms of the family's mental illness. because of this, rosemary was more driven to try and figure out what the hell it was and what they could do about it, because she wanted to help her mother and because she didn't want to suffer the same fate.

this led her to explore her telepathic powers further, beyond what was usual for the family. selfishly, she covertly performed several attempts at manipulating her mother's mind to make her "immune" to the hallucinations that she saw - but nothing seemed to work. eventually, rosemary's mother was killed after her hallucinations drove her to further self-violence and risky situations. shortly before her mother's death, rosemary's mental manipulations were discovered by her aunts and grandmother, and she was warned to stop. when her mother died, rosemary's family members assumed that she caused it and kicked her out; rosemary herself doesn't feel any remorse for her actions, and doesn't question whether or not her involvement caused her mother's suicide.
