The Essential Guide to Plagiarism - Orion - 08-17-2021

Sometimes there's a character or group we take with us everywhere, just like a kid and their stuffed animal as a kid. Although this time... There's some rules about that. Beasts of Beyond wants to prevent plagiarism at all costs, but not prevent that safe and at home feeling. After all, reminiscing on that past nostalgia is enthralling. So here is a short guide on what you can do to follow our rules and avoiding stealing other works!

What is plagiarism?
According to Merriam-Webster, plagiarism is defined as 'to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own' or 'to use (another's production) without crediting the source.' This includes:
Verbatim plagiarism: The act of copying another's work word for word.
Mosaic plagiarism: Taking multiple quotes from several pieces without paraphrasing or crediting authors properly.
Inadequate paraphrase: When the paraphrase is too close to the original quote.
Uncited paraphrase: Successful paraphrasing without credit to the original source.
Uncited quotation: Information quoted within your piece but without any citation or credit.

How can I avoid plagiarism?

Bringing over characters to BoB
— Any previous history, whether needing no changes or to be slightly rewritten, must occur within the world of Beasts of Beyond. They cannot switch realms or teleport.
— Any mention of groups off-site or within your personal world must be changed/renamed.
— Characters kept within their story can remain as long as they not roleplayed/powerplayed without permission and only mentioned.

Bringing over groups to BoB
— Groups from previous websites or worlds cannot be brought over word-for-word as that is plagiarism and can cause legal issues. You may carry over the same general concept paraphrased, but the name should be changed and all recognizable aspects will have to be removed, including history and it's characters. Please also provide a new spin on the group to make it stand out from it's previous state.
— If you can prove you wrote the entirety of another group off-site, you may be permitted to include them on-site. Please message staff for details.
— Any and all aspects of this are also true to taking groups off-site, otherwise it is considered plagiarism and can have consequences.
