THE SECRET TO HEAVEN [ / just outside camp ] - newkit - 01-29-2021

[align=center][div style="width: 40%; text-align: justify;"]frustration.

he kept getting so close, so close that he could taste it but he never got there. it was a frustration that built so steadily, making him feel ready to burst at the seams, like he might explode. each step felt like it was his first, each day having to relearn because he never quite new what his joints would feel like or what he'd feel like doing. that day, he just so happened to be done. done with feeling like he was never going to get this done.

he was angry, angry that he couldn't go and do the things the other kids did just because he wasn't "ready", whatever that meant. he was perfectly ready, and anger was great motivation. he'd started his journey far too early into the morning, and he didn't stop. he didn't stop if he tripped and fell on his face, didn't stop if his feet began to hurt or if his ankles felt like the bone was being ground raw at the joints. really, the only thing standing between him and the entrance was air, especially this early in the morning, and he wasn't going to stop.

he was lucky that no one caught him.

out of the many times he'd tried, the many times he'd been grabbed off the ground and carried away from the main entrance, the one time he didn't, there was no crowd. there was no adult trailing behind him like he was a lost child who needed chasing down. it was a lift, one foot in front of the other.. end destination. why was it so easy this time? he stared at the entrance, half expecting one of his dads to come and scoop him up, tell him he's not ready, he didn't know. one lift, two lift, one foot in front of the other twice over, and there he stood.

outside of camp.

twenty more paces out, and he stood in a puddle of mud, staring in awe at what he'd always stared out at, like he'd never seen a tree before, like he'd never rolled around in the mud within camp. it was just different when he wasn't in the confines of it all. there were no alligators waiting to chomp down on him like he'd feared, no threats, just the sound of the birds waking up as the sky turned blue and the sound of puddles shifting and catching the raindrops that dripped from the leaves above, left wet from the showers the night before.

now came the hard part.. turning around and going back.

but he wasn't ready quite yet, so he sat back on his haunches, and closed his eyes. "wow.. that was exhausting."

ATBASH CIPHER
you laugh and smile at me, but you don't see a thing !
One would think that Atbash had a lot to be frustrated about, but ironically the she-cat didn't really find herself angry that often. Maybe that was a bad thing, however, considering how often it got her into bad situations - namely, trusting Caesar after everything the tom had done. She should have ignored him, should have been angry at him for trying to manipulate her to being on his side, and yet Atbash still found herself believing that he was only misguided. And ironically enough, Atbash could also relate to Newkit's feeling of wanting to explore and get out of a place you're practically forced to stay in. Back home, she wasn't allowed outside her family's farm without her brothers or her parents, just because of how society there treated females. Unlike Newkit, however, Atbash didn't go against her parents' orders, mostly because she knew how the outside world would treat her - and this place was far, far more different than her birthplace.

After a quick yawn and stretch, Atbash decided to start the day by going for a little walk around the territory to warm herself up. It was a bit of a habit, with her being apart of Snowbound once and it being freezing in the morning; Tanglewood wasn't nearly as cold as Snowbound had been, but still, the savannah was a person of habit. Perhaps unfortunate for Newkit, though, Atbash happened to go the same route he did - though she didn't really know that Aurum was (understandably) confining Newkit to camp. "Oh hey!" Atbash chirped, hoping she didn't scare the kit. "You're one of Aurum's kids, right?"

CAUSE EVEN BLOOD WILL RUN, LIKE THE TEARS OF A SAINT !
She probably should have noticed sooner that Newkit had finally busted out. It had been too quiet, after all, and if the town wasn't wrangling Ares or preventing a natural disaster from unmanaged powers, then by god there was something to wrestle with. But not today, at least, not in the beginning. It was pretty still, nothing out of place or out of order. And that should have been red flag number one.

In the process of making her rounds of haunting the place, Arrow had inevitably stumbled upon the escaped baby convict, but it didn't quite click immediately that he was absolutely not where he was supposed to be by order of his old man. Maybe it was because he was still pretty close to the entrance, or because her mind absolutely did not expect him to make it out, so "Newkit is now outside the confines of the town" wasn't a thought that manifested, because why should it? "Mornin', kiddo." The ghost greeted casually, stepping around the small child as her eyes focused on a bird that landed on a branch above, shaking more water droplets from the leaves as the perch shook slightly under the round little avian's weight. One of the drops fell through her nose, causing her to scowl at one of the constant reminders that she lacked a solid form. She still had yet to figure out how Beck managed.

"Strollin' around outside too, you two? It's best after a nice rain-"

If there could have been any sound affect to pair with the abrupt stop in her tracks, a brake screech would have been perfect. She muttered the single word "outside" quietly, then whipped her head around as the realization hit. "Wait-" Arrow looked at the kit, then behind him where the entrance to the Tanglewood camp was, then back at Newkit, not disappointed or upset in the slightest, just incredibly confused, and a little impressed, if she was being honest. "You finally broke out, you little rebel."

If anyone understood the struggles that her brother had gone through with Newkit, it was Moth. Having her own child that had trouble getting around the territory of Tanglewood, she knew that it was hard to figure out when the time would be right for the child to do things on their own, especially if they wanted so badly to do it already. From a familial stance, Moth still worried for New, worried that he would harm himself if he managed to push it too far, but it seemed as though pushing it was a common thing in their family, for Moth knew that both Aurum and herself had done so in the past. It just couldn't be helped sometimes.

From a medical stand, however, Moth knew that Newkit was ready to begin whatever the next part of his adventure would be, starting with, at some point, leaving the town that the tanglers called home. She just hadn't had the time to figure out how she would have said that to either of the boy's parents. But it seemed as though she wouldn't have to, for as she walked out the town she saw the forms of three bodies, one much smaller than the other two, and she would carefully move forward, offering a short smile to those there. She would have liked New's first time to be accompanied by someone, but there were others there now so it was fine, he seemed fine for the most part at the very least. "How do you like it New?" The reaper would ask, looking down on her nephew for a moment before looking back over the territory. "First time I saw the swamp I thought it was disgusting, but now I love it."
