THE FUTURE IS NO MORE ☆ devland - roan ; - 07-29-2020

It was surprisingly uncommon for others to come to Roan with injuries. Or rather, it was uncommon for them to come to him, rather than him going to them. The sage seemed to have an uncanny ability to show up on the scene of an injury almost immediately, and it was something that he actually prided himself on. So, it was actually fairly rare for him to have someone at his door asking for assistance. In this case, the young sage had actually been standing outside of the temple, his wings folded against his back as he snorted through his herb bag. He had been working on Ament's wounds just a few moments ago, and hadn't yet had time to head back to his nearby treehouse home. Before he could finish his sorting, however, he was surprised by the sound of approaching voices. Ears twitching, Roan raised his head, only to see none other than his uncle, Michael, and some sort of newcomer walking up the path. The two of them seemed to be talking, with Michael chattering away. Eventually the bobcat stopped, gesturing towards Roan with a paw so that the other could see. Michael then waved at Roan, turned, and promptly walked away in the other direction.

Resisting the rather heavy urge to sigh at his uncle for not explaining the situation, Roan got up to his paws, grabbing his satchel in his jaws before he moved over to the newcomer, Devland. His eyes scanned over the other quickly, before eventually falling on the wound in Dev's shoulder. The sage winced as soon as he saw it, placing his satchel carefully down nearby. Sitting back on his haunches, the siamese began to talk softly as he pulled things from the satchel, including clean bandages, and various herbs, "Hello, I'm Roan, the sage around here. I'm assuming my uncle told you about me? I'm the healer for all of the Typhoon." Tail flicking behind him, the draconic feline then gestured a paw towards Devland's shoulder, questioning with a cock of his head, "I'm... also assuming that you're here to get that treated? Unless you have some other horrible wound that you're hiding... incredibly well." His mother's trademark snark was back in his voice, present because of the fact that he had already been tired from treating Ament. Hopefully Devland wouldn't be quite as hard to treat as a feral raptor.

Exhaustion tugged at his soul, and though his movements were already slowed because of his injury, weariness made him slower. Then again, maybe everything just felt like it was running in slow motion. So much had happened to him in such a short time that he surmised his brain was struggling to keep up. Yes, he firmly decided, that had to be it, but his conviction was weak.

Thankfully, it didn't take long before Michael lead him directly to the Sage. He was quiet for a moment, watching Michael's small exchange with Roan. Slight annoyance trickled into Devland's head when Michael walked off without an introduction or explanation, but he supposed the bobcat was probably busy. Moreover, he had been kind enough to lead Devland here. Besides, Devland knew he didn't need Michael to explain things - Devland wasn't some helpless child.

'Oh,' the brown feline thought, 'he's talking.' Devland had almost missed the other's introduction. The boy's head tilted to one side at Roan's words. "Aren't you kinda young for all of that? We're practically the same age, and you're in charge of all healing here?" His words weren't barbed or condescending. Instead, they contained a genuine curiosity. Plus, he was totally not stalling. Half-lidded eyes watched too closely as Roan pulled medical supplies from his bag, and Devland wasn't able to hide the slight crinkle of his nose. He forced the grimace to disappear.

He did stifle a laugh at the other's next string of words. He hummed lightly, replying, "Well, unless that was your application to be my shrink, the shoulder's the only thing I'm here for." Instinctively, like he had done at his joining, Devland angled his head so his wound was difficult to look at without angling yourself in a strange way. "I, um, got into kind of a weird situation. Nothing super-major though, but I think it's infected. I kept trying to treat it, but everything I did made it worse. Herbs all kind of run together in my head." He offered the other a sheepish grin before laughing airily. "But I guess there's a reason you're a healer and I'm not, hm?"

He hesitated then, fighting the panic that was slowly but surely rising in the pit of his stomach. He needed to continue thinking of conversation topics. "Oh! Silly me," he began, grinning warmly now, "It's nice to meet you, Roan. And I apologize for not introducing myself. My name is Devland Taji. Feel free to call me either or even both, I really don't mind." He paused briefly, acting as though he was considering his next words with care despite having already planned everything out. "Though, you know, I can't say I'm too fond of nicknames. How about you, hm? Guy like you's probably got a nickname or two?"

He was definitely stalling.

Aren't you a bit young to be the healer? The question was a loaded one for Roan, who resisted the strong urge to recoil when it was asked of him. On one hand, he felt slightly insulted, since he knew that despite his young age, he was still an extremely talented medic. On the other hand, he agreed with Devland on some level. The responsibilities of the only healer within the Typhoon had been heaped on his shoulders far too early, and he still sometimes wished that Ahab was around to help shoulder the burden. Not too keen on showing weakness to anyone, let alone a newcomer to the group, Roan just let out a scoff, shaking his head firmly from side to side, "I'll have you know that I'm a very good healer, no matter what my age is. And seeing as no one else is exactly leaping at the opportunity to treat the entire group, the responsibility has fallen on me." He tried not to sound too hostile in his response, despite the fact that he so desperately wanted to be. After all, he couldn't make any new friends if he went around telling the new guys to fuck off when they had the audacity to question his young age. It wasn't as if he wasn't confident in himself, after all. He just had a tendency to get overwhelmed, when all the cards were down and he had to scramble to hold everything together.

Gritting his teeth briefly, the siamese shook those unpleasant thoughts away, his blue gaze refocusing on the other male's shoulder. The sight of it caused a grimace to come to his face, the telltale signs of an infection making his skin crawl beneath his fur. It wasn't anywhere near as bad as the infections that had plagued Ament's wounds, but it still wasn't good. Letting out a soft grunt of frustration when the other angled away from him, he spoke bluntly, "It's not good, I can tell you that. It's definitely infected, and if we leave it this way, it could get much worse. Hell, you could lose the arm." Maybe he was exaggerating a little for dramatic effect, but hopefully it would motivate Devland to stop hiding the infected wound away. Moving forward, Roan placed a paw gently against Dev's jaw, trying to push it upwards and away so that he could inspect the wound more closely. As he did so, he muttered in Devland's ear, his command short, "This'll hurt, so stay still." He didn't exactly give the other a chance to respond, digging his claws into the wound in order to open up any infected scar tissue that had begun to form. He then grabbed one of his wetted down clean rags, scrubbing softly against the wound to clean it out, and get rid of any blood.

The draconic feline was not a big fan of stalling, and that couldn't have been any more clear as he cleaned out the wound, his ears vaguely perked to listen to Devland's rambling as he worked. When he believed that the injury was sufficiently clean, Roan turned to head back to his bag, grabbing a couple of herbs that he began to mix into a poultice roughly, with his paws. As he did so, he spoke in a calm, although tired sounding, voice, "It's a pleasure to meet you, Devland. Although I wish it could be under better circumstances." He then turned back to face the other male, shaking his head, "And I don't really have any nicknames. Roan is short enough that it doesn't exactly necessitate the need for them... my mama calls me her beloved son, though." It felt weird, sharing personal information about himself so soon, but it was also mostly a tactic to get Dev to calm down before he applied the poultice.

[align=center][div style=" background-color: transparent; border: 0px solid black; width: 60%; min-height: 8px; font-family: arial; line-height: 110%; text-align: justify; padding: 25px"]It seemed his question hit a little too close to home. While it would be an outright lie to say Devland didn't purposefully strike low blows, in this situation at least, that wasn't his intention. Dark eyes watched as a tiny, angry flame ignited in Roan, but Devland couldn't stop the way the corners of his lips twitched in a smirk - especially at how it seemed Roan was trying to stay composed. "Easy now," he soothed, his tone bright with amusement, "I didn't mean it like that. I was just curious, that's all. Besides, you should take pride in it. I mean, it must mean you're pretty talented if you're the only one, right?" Devland was positive he could never handle the stress that accompanied the position Roan was in. That was too much weight on one's shoulders. He could almost pity the guy.

Devland could tell Roan was getting frustrated with his patient. It was amusing, and Devland wished he felt worse about keeping the other from his obviously important job as a healer. He listened as Roan spoke, wondering how someone could be so straightforward. That definitely wasn't Devland's style. At the mention of losing an arm, the boy averted his eyes. That didn't sound good... Still, as much as he trusted Roan's medical expertise, the whole thing was uncomfortable. He wasn't fond of healing; something about it made him incredibly nervous. Arm be damned, he thought. He just needed to keep stalling. Roan was already agitated by him, so he would probably get completely fed up in a few minutes anyway.

And then Roan was touching his face. Devland stiffened immediately, breath caught in his throat. He'd been looking away when Roan moved, so he was caught off guard by the sudden push. He grunted angrily at that, but it was more from his rising anxiety than anything. Being so easily surprised and worried like this was embarrassing, and Devland's face communicated as much. He also wasn't used to being the center of attention in this way. At Roan's request, Devland scoffed. "Ha, well-" His words broke off with a muted pained sound. The pain in his shoulder was severe, and even though the work Roan was doing was part of the healing process, Devland was angry. However, the harsh feelings he harbored for the Sage cooled as the healer worked to clean the infection. "You really should warn me better next time. Geez, I didn't think it was going to hurt that badly." He pouted.

From the corner of his eye, he watched the other work. It was clear Roan knew exactly what he was doing, and Devland tried to remember if he had ever been that sure of himself in his life. As Roan mixed together a variety of herbs, the havana thought otherwise. "Better circumstances, huh? Maybe. Still, somehow, I feel like us meeting like this is pretty fitting," he responded.

At the mention of nicknames, Devland nodded. Roan was a short name, sure, but he bet he could think of one. He opened his mouth to say as much but quickly closed it at the mention of how Roan's mother referred to him. Jealousy and perhaps sadness surged through Devland's system at that. He didn't have the best relationship with his own mother, and try as he might, he could not help coveting the family dynamics Roan possessed. For all the wild thoughts that circulated his mind, his facial expression was light and almost calm. However, for a fraction of a second, his lips turned downward in a frown, but in a heartbeat, he was lazily grinning again. "That's really sweet actually," Devland murmured. "Hm. It might be weird if I called you that though. Beloved though... That's got a nice ring to it." He chuckled at that, waving the slight flirtation away with a paw. "But on a serious note, no one's ever called you Ro before? I feel like that's such a missed opportunity. I mean, come on. It's right in the name." Roan's tactics for calming Devland were at least beginning to work.

In most cases, it was difficult for someone to truly fluster Roan. Even when he had been much younger, and more curious and bright-eyed, rather than his current exhausted state, he had never really been easy to surprise. He had always been curious about pretty much everything that had been going on around him, so instead of letting himself be surprised by everything that came next, he had investigated. Threw himself into books and interactions with others, explored every nook and cranny he was capable of finding during his young life... it had been fun, even if it seemed especially tiring to him now. However, even with all of his knowledge and the new, more composed personality he had as he neared true adulthood, Devland had managed to throw him off, somewhat. The other was just so... normal. He seemed like what the average teenager would be around Roan's age, and since Roan had been an only child, growing up in a time when the Typhoon had very few other kids, it was strange to experience. Not unpleasant, though, save for Devland's occasional whining and the fact that he was clearly trying to squirm out of treatment.

The siamese's agitation over the earlier comment was quick to fade, mainly because of Dev's quick compliments, something that Roan didn't hear often. Sure, the sage was thanked whenever he treated someone's wounds, but real compliments were rare, and the other's words made his face grow hot. Taking a deep breath, he found himself muttering in response, "I suppose you're right... I do take pride in it, though. A lot of pride. Especially since I learned from someone who was very talented..." He trailed off for a moment, his eyes growing a bit unfocused before he hastily shook his head. Now was not the time to go delving into his mind, or his feelings about his grandfather. Instead, he turned his attention back to his work, trying not to express the amusement that coiled in his chest, laughter threatening to bubble its way up at the way Devland stiffened and huffed with every little movement. At the mention of more warning, Roan finally allowed a snort of laughter to bubble forth, leaving his muzzle in a wave as he shook his head from side to side, "I didn't give you more of a warning so that you wouldn't tense up. If you got all stiff and anxious waiting for it, then it would only make the pain worse. Instead, I did it quick, like ripping off bandages." He let out a soft hum of satisfaction at his own explanation, his paw dipping down into the cocktail of herbs that he had created, soothingly rubbing the concoction against Devland's wound.

The feline took notice of the brief flash of a frown that appeared across Dev's face at the mention of family, but he didn't bring it up for now, simply noting it away for later. Instead, he turned his attention towards the bandages he was pulling forth from his bag, ready to lay them on the other's shoulder. Devland managed to catch him off guard once again, just as Roan had begun to wrap his shoulder carefully. The vaguely flirtatious comment caused the sage's face to grow hot once again, his paws fumbling slightly in his careful and meticulous work. He recovered quickly, however, muttering, "I wouldn't... wouldn't recommend it. If my mother heard you say that even once, she'd be drilling you with enough questions to make your head spin." Ignoring the way that his heart was pounding wildly in his chest, he then moved eagerly onto the next subject, "I think there have been a few times where my sister has called me Roro. It's a bit odd though, considering both my mom and I have similar name sounds, so we both share the ro." He was glad that his methods were seemingly working, considering he was nearly done bandaging Devland's shoulder entirely.

[align=center][div style=" background-color: transparent; border: 0px solid black; width: 60%; min-height: 8px; font-family: arial; line-height: 110%; text-align: justify; padding: 25px"]For as much as he was trying to slip out of the medical treatment, his attention was focused heavily on Roan. He watched the frustration melt slowly from the healer's face only to be replaced by a blush from the compliment. Devland hummed softly in amusement at that. "It certainly seems like you learned a lot from them." He might have asked more about Roan's teacher, but the shadow that crossed over the other's face read, 'do not enter.' Besides, the topic of conversation was shifting.

Devland simply pouted when it was obvious Roan was trying not to laugh at him. In a few heartbeats, however, the medic was chuckling, and despite being laughed at, the corners of Devland's lips twitched upwards as he fought a smile. "Your logic might be airtight, Roan, but think about my poor, fragile heart," the boy whined, pouting like a horrifically petulant child. He placed a paw over his chest to emphasize his point. His paw fell as Roan began to place the poultice on his wound. Devland's nose crinkled, and he shifted uncomfortably. "What's all in this? It's a lot different than the one I made. Not that mine was better... Ugh." He seemed agitated at that memory. "Just curious."

Tired eyes observed Roan as he reached for the bandages. A fleeting thought came to him then: now was the perfect moment to run. Roan was distracted, and Devland could be fast if he needed. He felt himself tense, but before he could fully commit to the idea, Roan had turned back to bandage his shoulder. The havana might have sighed deeply, but the way Roan flushed from his earlier comment made him laugh. "Roan, if I didn't know better, I'd say you were blushing," his spoke matter-of-factly. "Do you let all of your patients fluster you like this or am I special?" He tried to pretend not to notice the way Roan stumbled in wrapping his shoulder, but his little smirk gave him away.

He tilted his head as Roan spoke of his mother, purposefully getting in the way of Roan's work. "Well, I'll have you know I'm pretty good at answering questions. I know too many things, so I'm sure I'd offer her good answers." He tipped his head closer to his shoulder, hoping it would stall Roan but knowing it wouldn't. "She might actually get fed up. I've heard I have a tendency to ramble." As the other male continued on about his sister's nickname for him, Devland nodded. "Hm, fine, fine. I was planning on sticking with Roan anyhow - unless you actually are partial to beloved," he presented the other a lopsided grin, looking up at Roan before laughing breezily and shaking his head.

"Oh, hey!" he said, opting for yet another change in subject, twisting again as Roan worked, "What's your favorite bug? Say you had to pick your favorite insect. What would it be?" Was the question straight out of left field? Yes. Did Devland really care? No. His brain just worked that way.
