To say that Rhine had felt rather odd about assigning himself an apprentice, would be a major understatement. Although he had trained apprentices in the past, he had always been assigned them from an outside source, so when it had come to re-assigning apprentices that had lost their mentors? It had been a difficult process, especially since it involved evaluating himself to see who he would be best for. Ultimately, he had ended up picking Sanguinepaw, mainly because she reminded him of himself, at a younger age. Fairly responsible, and worried about those around her, particularly when it came to Sunpaw. He could only hope that she wouldn't end up hating him for what he had said to her brother, even if it hadn't been particularly harsh. The leader simply wasn't sure what would happen with the other apprentice quite yet. The medicine cat route seemed the most obvious, but was it possible that someone would be able to handle a somewhat disabled apprentice? Still, he shouldn't have been focused on that, at least for the moment. Sanguinepaw was the focus, and that was precisely why he had asked her to follow him after the meeting had finished.Humming a soft tune beneath his breath, the rusty red flecked tabby led Sanguinepaw out into the sand of the beach, turning to face her before he sat. Seeing as they would need to do some discussing before the training proper began, the leader allowed his tail to curl lazily over his paws. Tilting his head to one side, he waited until Sanguine had caught up before he spoke, smiling faintly, "I realize it may be a bit odd, having to adjust to a new mentor so soon after you had just begun training... but I promise I'll try and make this as painless as possible." Glancing over his shoulder towards the sea, Rhine opened his jaws to take in the taste of the salty air, before he spoke again, "What exactly was your mentor going over with you, before the hurricane? Given your age, I'm assuming that the two of you were focusing on aquatic prey?" Some outsiders may have found the way that Palmclan split their apprentice teaching into "phases" strange, but the group had simply found that it was the most effective way to teach. After all, an apprentice was less likely to forget things when they weren't trying to focus on twelve million different subjects at once. Sanguine's feelings in relation to said.. meeting were mixed. Of course they would be. She was excited, nearly bouncing off of the walls that her mentor, of all things, was the leader. The leader!. That was like, the highest honor, wasn't it? Sanguine was trotting after her mentor, a sly and happy grin on her face. But, the downside of the meeting. The torn look on Sun's face. It wasn't even a.. a grimace. It was straight, pure near-broken Sun. He didn't know what that meant. If he didn't know what it meant for him, where did his future lay? Sanguine tried her best to put it out of her mind. The apprentice followed closely to his paws, then slid to a stop upon the red flecked tabby turning about to face her. Slowly, she settled down to a sitting position herself, her tail still and eyes bright. "No no it's. It's fine- All of this is a big mess. No need to worry." She prompted, her ears flattening gently. The hurricane had been terribly hard on everyone. Her eyes dropped for a moment, the thought of her father ringing in her head for a moment, before she looked back up at his question. She nodded a tiny bit. "That's correct. Clearwater was teaching me about the brackish water fish." She replied, gently tilting her head a bit. Her eyes searched Rhinestone for a moment, but then they dropped away towards the water again. Sanguinepaw and Sunpaw were far from the only one worried about the young apprentice's eventual fate. When Rhinestonestar had been forced to step up, he had to evaluate all the apprentices that the group had, and try to see who was doing well. When he had come across Sunpaw, and had seen how the tom bad been irreversibly crippled... it had made the leader's heart ache. The rusty red feline didn't want to tell Sunpaw that he could never do anything warrior related again, but anything he did do would be difficult, and take a lot more time than anyone else. Rhine could only hope that wouldn't dampen Sanguinepaw's spirits too much when it came to training – and that she knew she could trust him to make a good decision regarding her brother. He had to make sure that everyone trusted him... after all, what else was the point of the leader, if not to be the one everyone could look to in times of stress?Returning his mind to the present, Rhine offered Sanguinepaw a soft smile at her reassurances, silently glad that she wasn't going to be too hard on him. The leader's tail flicked behind him as he glanced towards the water, giving a slight nod of his head before he spoke, "Brackish water fish, eh? If I'm remembering my own training right, that means we'll have to go near where the river meets the sea. Follow me." He gestured a paw towards her before leading her along the beach, towards the cliffs. They eventually reached where the small but rather fast flowing river met the sea, with Rhine settling along the edge of it. Pointing a paw towards the water, he explained quietly, "Brackish water fish, like most fish, require a lot of patience to hunt. Since if they see you – or your shadow – they'll dart right away from you. Still, they can be even more tricky, since they need their water to be slightly salty. That means they often swim near where the river is running the fastest. In order to counteract this, you wanna find choke points under the water, where the sea meets the river. Anywhere the rocks are poking out, or where things are clustered closer together. Things tend to slow down around there." He pointed out a few of the wet rocks jutting forth from the river, being careful not to cut himself on them. |
