I'm mean and bitter [p, selby] - CAUSTIC. - 03-26-2020 His breathing was getting worse and it was impeding his work. Fixing the portal device was crucial to his and Octavio's survival, it was a task that had be completed at any cost. Caustic knew this dimension was extremely dangerous to the both of them, himself moreso. If he failed to survive, his aging body or his illness would destroy him first. Octavio was a hazard to himself, completely reckless in every way. He knew if Octavio wasn't careful, the che- daredevil could get himself killed. There would be no respawn, as far as either knew. He would die permanently and everything they had would be for naught. It was acting particularly bad this morning, the effort he had expelled yesterday pulling away all the kudzu probably did this. He felt so weak, he was used to running all of the arena on a daily basis, killing others left and right for sport and now? He was reduced to a wolf with equally-toxic venom and- an unhinged, feral growl releases from his throat, gas sneaking through his teeth. He feels degraded and demoralized and it made his mood all the more awful. He lays down for a moment, letting the coughs rack through his body, burning through his lungs and up his throat, to his nose. Mucus and spit splattered onto the dirt, as Caustic let his head rest on his paws, taking small breaths to regain control, and resuming into normal breathing. Caustic tilted his head back, standing, then rebalancing himself. No one saw it. This time. He continues his walk, stepping up to the Sawbone's home finally. Caustic growls, knowing he will have to explain and expect patient confidentiality from the cat. His eyes squeeze shut, inhaling a wheezy, wet breath, leaning against the house's doorframe with his shoulder, and quickly sitting. Weakness, this was all weakness. Any weakness here would get him killed, because the strong would filter out the weak. His eyes cast towards the direction he believes the Typhoon to be in, and Octavio's face flashes through his vision. He had to be strong, to survive and get them out of here. He lets his paw slap against Selby's door, well aware any of the kids were liable to greet him and hoped the Sawbone himself would be the one to answer. Caustic also hoped that Selby would be able to help him. While Caustic had a love of plants and had tried reading a few herb books to find his own alternatives, it was pulling him away from other work. Besides, there was no denying Selby probably had more experience than him, even if calling herbs medicine was a far stretch of logic. He tilts his head back, snout clear of the door as he knocks again. Though he knew that he could not cure his daughter’s congenital disease, he hoped that he could treat it and perhaps provide some sort of reprieve from her wheezing. Still, after a few weeks of research and a few tests, the new father was coming up empty. It was torture. Every failure rebroke his heart. A knock at the door distracted him from his book, and a large ear flicked in curiosity. His children wouldn’t knock; they knew they could just come in. It was Moth’s place technically, so she wouldn’t either. Few possessed the manners to knock these days, besides that. When Moth birthed, he remembered all sorts of people bursting in through the door without notice to intrude on the tender, private moment. Setting his research aside, Selby came to the door and opened it. Greeting him was one of the intruders on that faithful day. “Oh... Caustic,” he said slowly, struggling to remember the name he’d only heard in passing. He’d encountered the wolf numerous times before; he remembered that Ivan had been irritated by his callousness, and Quentin frightened by the odd green gas he exhaled. Not the most glowing review. “Erm, hello. Come on in. Is there anything I can help you with?” Selby dipped his head as he stepped outside of the doorway, granting the larger creature entry. Re: I'm mean and bitter [p, selby] - CAUSTIC. - 04-07-2020 Oh, this would be so easy to fix back in his own time. He was on regular medication, then. It kept all his symptoms away, minus a slight cough. Caustic lets his weight fall and rest against the doorframe. He hears little pawsteps incoming, and relief floods over him. This was stupid, asking the Sawbone for herbs, but he could barely breathe. The door opens, and Caustic lets his eyes reopen, looking down at Selby. He takes in a breathe- it's wheezy and wet, thick with mucus. The wolf's head tilts back, trying to straighten his airway out to make it easier to breathe. "Sel-" He's immediately wracked by coughs, throing his head down to direct his coughs at the floor. Caustic's shoulders wrack back and forth at the motion. It takes him a moment to egain control, until his breathing regulates back into short, steady breathes. He raises a paw, gesturing from his nose to his chest. "I need you..." his voice is low and soft, breathes heavy between statements. "To keep your silence," it's a request for patient confidentiality. He was no stranger to questionable breathing; between Beck’s perpetual death rattle, Alice’s seemingly constant state of lung infection, and Quentin’s asthma, the father was practically an expert. Still, he was far from desensitized, though his emotional distance from the wolf allowed him to easily hide that in the moment. Slipping into a familiar state of professionalism, the sawbones coaxed him inside and allowed the door to swing shut behind them. As he listened to his request, Selby dipped his head in respectful acknowledgment. “Of course. I won’t tell anyone,” he said softly. He understood the want for privacy. The healer was reserved by nature, not one to quickly volunteer information about himself, much less others. Still, while not a completely open book, he was not locked either. It didn’t take much to get to know him, just a little time. He wordlessly led Caustic to a little sitting area, silently urging him to sit and rest. “Do you know what’s wrong? It’s okay if you don’t, it just makes it easier.” Re: I'm mean and bitter [p, selby] - CAUSTIC. - 04-11-2020

Paws drag as he shuffles into Selby's home, his metal toes making a scratching noise against hard wood. Caustic pulls himself into the sitting area, slowly laying down onto his belly. His legs are at an awkward position, so he shifts to put his head between his forelegs, hindlegs neatly at his side. The wolf opens his mouth, letting a wheezy, congested breath follow. Gas expels from him, briefly masking his own face. He looks to Selby, ears tilting down and eyes growing wide.

Caustic knows he's in a display of weakness, but the Wolf's body will not let him move. It attempts a whimper, but Caustic silences it with a growl. Sleby would see him vulnerable, but whimpering in the medic's home was too far. "Cystic fibrosis," And so comes from the wolf his greatest flaw. Easy to manage back in his own world, but here? Untreated, it could kill him in a year, and Caustic hates the idea of a death such as his own wasted by a genetic disorder. He wheezes, chest rising and falling, "Please help me, Selby." He recognized the disease, of course. It was far beyond his abilities to cure, though the wolf didn’t seem to be expecting one. He also knew the disease would eventually be fatal. He did not doubt that Caustic was already familiar with this. Treatment of symptoms and elongation of life was the best he could offer. “Of course,” he manages after a moment, studying the creature before him carefully. “It’s my job; you don’t have to beg.” A lame attempt at humor, but his jokes were not something the sawbones has been come to known for. Turning away from Caustic for a moment, Selby retrieved his bag of supplies. Rifling through it for a moment, he pulled forth a small jar of prepared syrup. Quickly opening it and giving it a sniff, sharp scents of cinnamon and ginger and fennel met him. Satisfied with the freshness of the product, he came back. “This should help a little. It’s an expectorant, so it should help get the stuff from your lungs out. Be careful not to take too much, though, it will make you sleepy.” Re: I'm mean and bitter [p, selby] - CAUSTIC. - 04-30-2020

On reflex, he flips his ears back and lifts his lip in a snarl. He didn't really find the humor in it. Caustic thinks about where his clock was. He probably had a few years left here, and that's why it was all the more important he escaped.

His life depended on it, quite literally. He pulls himself up, trying to regain at least some semblance of self-respect. He stares at the concoction for a moment, lip upturning and one of the dots above his eyes raising in some form of disgust. "Am I supposed to ingest this, or?" he wheezes, racking his shoulders. He was aware that his medicine would seem primitive to former humans. He was aware that it was less effective. Most of all, he was painfully aware that some of the time, the services he offered weren’t good enough. He knew it. Sometimes, he was afraid that the guilt of it would eat him alive. Arrow, his first patient, would forever remain a sore reminder. But he did the best he could. Through all the limitations of the world around him and of his education, he did the best he could. He constantly tries to get better at his job. To have the wolf practically sneer at his attempt was an insult. One he would have to look over. Professionalism. Shoving his hurt into the corner of his mind, he simply nodded. “Yes, it is meant to be ingested. I’m sorry for the confusion.” |
