IF I WERE TEN FEET TALL ☆ o, ice fishing - redvox. - 01-25-2020

REDVOX "VINNY" ABRAMO - cis male - goat-bat hybrid - harbinger
[Image: pEeXKGc.png]
Food was beginning to become a little bit scarce around the Halls. It wasn't so bad that anyone was starving, and their storage pile of food was still a decent enough size for now, but Vinny knew that eventually it was going to start shrinking. Considering that they were in the near dead center of winter at the moment, there being a lack of prey running about wasn't exactly surprising, but that didn't mean it made Redvox particularly happy, either. As someone who had never been very good at hunting to begin with thanks to his odd and gangly form, trying to hunt for bits of prey when they were hiding deep within their warm little hollows was even worse, and Vin couldn't help how frustrated he was getting. More than a few times he had been so close to nabbing a rare piece of prey when they darted off in the right direction to squeeze themselves into some little cubby,  far away from the reach of Vinny's large wing talons. It made him want to scream, and occasionally he even did let out a loud groan of annoyance. Eventually he had just given up, plopping back on his haunches and sighing heavily as he thought of what he could do instead. Thankfully, there was an activity that Vin could remember from his youth, one that he had been taught about by Hadley.

Getting the supplies that he needed had been relatively easy, considering the humans that had once lived here had evidently partaken in the activity of ice fishing as well, which didn't really surprise him. After all, they must've similarly had food shortages in the winter. So, once he had his supplies, he dragged it all out in a bucket to the nearby river, which had iced over thanks to the cold chill of the air. Once he was sat at the edge of the water, it took a little bit of fumbling to get the ice carver to work for him. Using it with wings instead of hands was hardly ideal, but soon enough he ended up with a hole in the ice large enough to fit his head through, with fish swimming about beneath it. Vinny spent a long while just sitting at the edge of the water, psyching himself up and waiting for the perfect moment to strike out and catch something. Thankfully, the perfect moment came before too long, with a fish lingering just below the whole for just a moment too long to be safe. Vinny's long neck struck out, and his vampire bat fangs sunk down into tough scales, wrenching the creature up and out of the water. Once he had bit down hard enough for the fish to stop flailing restlessly, he tossed it into the bucket next to him, turning his gaze back to the icy water below. He'd keep going until no more fish came near, and he'd be unable to make anymore progress.

the cold was not too often an issue to cottontail. with insulated fur made for freezing temperatures and seasonal shedding or the warming climates, they never seemed to have much of an issue. they felt bad for their friends of course. often times they wondered the 'how's' and 'why's' for their natural makeup. winter's occurred almost everywhere, how did they not all develop the same coat type they had? a bit too philosophical at times for their own good, questions like these often hurt their head after a while.

in one of their many outings for foraging they came across the harbinger. curious, they approached the edge with the other. "are you fishing? i can help if you need it?" they pulled down the hood of their cloak with a smile. "i'm a decent swimmer. hunting in the water isn't anything new to me. i could herd them over to you, and you can catch them!"

Cottontail was here, and in all honesty, that alone almost made Vinny reel back in surprise. The sound of their voice was almost foreign to the harbinger after having gone so long without hearing it, and while he couldn't say he was displeased to see the other around again, it was still one hell of an occasion. A grin broke over the hybrid's face as he spoke softly to Cotton, shifting on his wings, "Hey there, Cottontail.." When he heard the other's question, he found himself hesitating slightly. Dive down beneath the water and herd them over to him? It was a decent idea, but even with Cottontail's thick and insulated coat, Vin wasn't sure how they'd do under ice cold water. Breaking his silence, he voiced his concerns clearly, sitting up from his position facedown near the edge of the water so that he could be heard more clearly, "Swim 'em over t'me? Well, that would certainly make all'a this go more quickly... but are y'sure you'll be alright swimmin' around in the water right now? It's cold as fuck, not t'mention the ice over most of it..." He was just now seeing them again, and he very much did not want to lose Cottontail again because they got trapped under the ice or died of hypothermia or something else unpleasant like that.

"Monsieur!" The ever-excited voice called, carrying the ever-upbeat boy.  As the temperature remained frigid and the snow continued to pile, the fox opted to remain a polar bear cub when he took trips to the outside.  "Monsieur!"

Abundant giggles and sliding paws brought the boy to a halt.  Bright eyes lit up like sparks, transfixed by the ice.  The wonderful silver-blue, reflecting the sky and sun.  A sight his father would surely dedicate to painting in his study.  Only the total accumulation of his willpower kept him from stepping out onto the river.  His large, white paws must be heavy.

Regardless, he rocked back.  "Oh, I can scare the fish too!  I wanna help!  Can I?  S'il vous plaît?"

Redvox blinked in surprise when Alaire came rushing over, shifting upwards on his large wings and sitting back on his haunches. He tilted his head to one side, his eyes slightly wide with amusement at how the little polar bear was bouncing around. Vinny's tail flicked around behind him as he listened to the boy's request, seemingly mulling it over. Truthfully he knew it probably wouldn't be a great idea to let both Cotton and Alaire chase after the fish, since there was more of a chance they'd just scare the fish off rather than actually help him, but... he couldn't say no to Alaire's little excited face. Chuckling softly, the male gave Alaire a toothy little smile before he spoke, "Uh... yeah. Yeah, 'course y'can help out Alaire. But, uh, you be careful too, alright? I don't want anybody gettin' frozen from divin' underneath freezing water." He really was worried about how Alaire and Cottontail would do, but... well, Alaire was in his polar bear form, and the hybrid knew polar bears to be pretty damn good at keeping warm, so perhaps he would be fine.

I GET MY WAY THROUGH GENOCIDE CAUSE FREAKS LIKE YOU JUST WASTE MY TIME
ASLISK - wyvern - powers - halls of hiraeth - regent - hot shot
The wyvern had never heard of ice fishing before. She hardly had ever fished before in general. A few times when she'd been babysitting she had practically been forced to dive headfirst into water and crab a fish for an addicted to fish kid. However, that water had always been lukewarm. Never frozen in a manner such as ice. The wyvern had elected to stride over in her lighter body, mostly because she didn't want to wind up breaking the ice with her other form. Her flaming parts were still a concern in the back of her mind, but not enough to fully deter her from coming over. She was careful, keeping her flaming tail away from the ice as much as she comfortably could. "If they fall in, I reserve the right to start a fire so they don't get sick." The cold sometimes could be too much, even for those that were meant to live there. She hadn't seen it happen, but her wild home certainly had more than enough oddities for such a thing to occur. "Or I might just make one anyways, because cold water and cold air really do not lusluing go together."
