Visiting the library became pure habit for the wildcat.  When he did not feel the drive to wander through the swamp or forest, he sat among the old shelves and tomes.  He sat, and read often, as well as thought back to a pair of mesmerizing eyes.  Two seasons in one pair of eyes.

While Torren knew the time was late, the youth knew he saw the splash of white step into the library.  A constant occurrence of spotting her at night, or insisting to stargaze or read, rather than sleep, told him more than anything his friend suffered an unfortunate aliment.  He felt the drive to ask, to wonder, if she'd suffered both before and after her imprisonment with the Pitt or only after, but he hated the thought of bringing an unhappy time up.

Instead, he offered to take her stargazing on the clear nights, unbothered by the loss of sleep if he saw her smile.  Whether or not she only saw a friend spending time with her, or trying to take care of her, he failed to know.  Regardless, he treasured the time spent together, never afraid to offer more of his time when she needed it.

Torren felt as though he were sinking, or perhaps falling.  Walking on ice he thought was stable only for it to crack beneath his paws.  He knew friends didn't get transfixed by their friend's eyes.  He knew friends didn't catch their breath when the starlight caught their friend's snow white fur, illuminating in an angelic affect.  He knew it all, but he loved their friendship dearly.  The youth could only think to regain his balance and continue on -- he wouldn't know how to tell her in the first place.

In a strange act of blankness, his mind could never formulate the proper words.

Despite the dizzying whirlwind of new emotions and confusion, Torren sought his friend, despite the late hour, with a gift.  His kingdom lacked Christmas in name, but the practice of sharing gifts during the winter season reigned strong.  To him, the act seemed to make the cold months warmer.

He sat close to an old bookshelf, studying the few legible titles near him.  Carefully, the feline slid off a necklace, letting it fall into an open paw.  A simple silver necklace, with the north star, like a compass, sitting as a simple, silver pendant.

Torren smiled softly, before gently clearing his throat.  "Hey, Kiira," he called out quietly.  Alone in the library, he knew she'd hear him.

The later into the night, the less populated the library.  Tanglewood housed a fair share of bookworms, after all.  Of all the buildings however, regardless of how many were inside, the library was the least likely someone might try to talk to her.

Funny, how horrible the solitude was for moons within a cell, but outside, she avoided social contact like the plague.  Funny, she'd never consider herself shy.  Only her voice stuttered -- at least she could talk -- and too much conversation drained her.

She'd been so friendly before.  She still was, she thinks.  Just.  More quiet than ever.

But she never lost her passion for books.  For stories.  Perhaps that was the reason she never flinched away from the sound of Torren's voice.  Ever friendly.  Polite.  A voice that enjoyed reciting stories and talk about the stars.

Even though she had been in the middle of an interesting book.  Her snow white ears perked.  Everything about her now shone white.  The splashes of gray she typically bore disappeared during the coldest months, under a thicker, snow-colored pelt.  Kiira supposed she didn't mind, even if she could hardly even tell it'd gotten colder save for the ice and snow outside.

Her paws, stable for the moment, followed the sound of her friend's voice.  Curious.  Perhaps he found a book he wanted to share.  He really should be sleeping.  A hypocritical though, she knew but...  "Hey."

"Hey-hey Torren.  Wh-what is it?"

Her unmatched hues danced, landing inquisitively on the shine of silver.  A necklace?

Softly, the wildcat's breath escaped his maw.  Eyes warm as they caught their friend's gaze, falling prey to the colors of her eyes again.  He could sit and count the shades of the seasons for days.  Again, a thought that belonged in the mind of someone more than a friend.  The youth straightened his shoulders and sought for the correct words, glancing at the pendant necklace in his paws.

"In the winter, it is custom to give gifts to your loved ones," he began quietly, feeling his face flush beneath his fur.  Too formal, Torren.  "Since you love the stars, I thought of my necklace." His eyes grew warm again, tracing the pattern of the pendant.  "My family made it for me before I left.  It's a reminder that you can always find guidance from the stars, no matter where you are."

"And I want you to have it." For a million and one reasons, he thought.  For the way her eyes glowed under starlight, and the way her soft voice grew excited and passionate about the sky.  For the nights they spent awake together, and the ones they did not.

More shyly, he asked, "may I?" Given acceptance, Torren would lift the necklace carefully with his teeth and gently slide it over her head, to let the pendant fall onto her chest.

Kiira felt a shift.  A curious weight on her chest.  Transfixed by curiosity.  Held on by a strange sense of gravity.  Torren always spoke so formally.  Polite.  She never minded.  He put thought and love and care into the words he spoke.  Given his love for books, that hardly surprised her.

Something felt different.  She couldn't name it.

Her eyes fell back down, catching his meaning before he finished speaking.  A gift.  For her.  A protest built on her tongue, resting fruitily in the back of her throat.  Closed.  But your family made it for you, she wanted to say.  I shouldn't take something like that.  Even if he wanted to give it to her.

Her voice stopped working altogether.  Words, slipping away before she could catch them.  What words, could she say?  When all she wanted to do was stammer and insist he keep such a lovely pendant, crafted for him.

She's caught in the light of his eyes.  The warmth.  The love.

Practically drowning and she had never seen it.

Denying him would shatter her.  The pieces she'd frantically held onto would crack and break and scatter to the winds until she was nothing but a shell, until she disappeared into nothing at all.  She could not say no to someone who looked at her with such unconditional warmth.  Who did nothing but care about her, when she felt as though nothing and no one in the world would notice if she finally did disappear for good.

She had no words.  Somehow her head moved, dipping down to allow Torren close the gap between them and gently lower the necklace.  Her cheeks felt strangely warm.  She could not remember the last time someone made her blush.

Kiira watched the pedant fall onto her chest, transfixed.  Her breath felt shaky.  Stuttering for air, not words.  Suspended by something that felt like a realization.  Epiphany.  It scared her.

Her voice rushes back, soft but suddenly intent. "Y-your gift isn't-isn't ready yet."  She felt suddenly conscious of the space between them, trying to keep herself from spinning away entirely.  His gift, hand-made, was taking a great deal of time to finish unfortunately.  She just wanted him to know.  She'd thought of him too.  "B-but you can s-see it, if-if you want to. An-an' how it's... It's turning out."

"Un-unless you want... Want it to be a com-complete surprise."

"Act-actually... D-did you want to... To stargaze tonight?  Un-unless it's too cold... It migh-might be too cold for... For you."
