She hated this task. She was ordered to do it by someone higher than her in the pecking order, and even after some arguement, Vathmos was forced to do so anyways. Vathmos was not a fan of wild dogs, due to her relationship with them from her old tribe. They had been in direct competition with eachother, and there had been a case or two where one of her clanmates was murdered by one.
In return, hyenas had killed wild dogs whenever they could. Their tribe took one in as a slave once, she couldn't remember anything about them or the owner though. Vathmos had... conflicted feelings about her former tribe. She had loved them and appreciated them as family, but they had cast her out when she broke one of their sacred laws. She shook her head, mind not wanting to go any further.
She came to what she was told was Mayari's home, and scratched at the door with her paw. It was close to dusk- Vathmos only hunted at night and slept most of the day. "Mayari. Get up. Let me in." Short and curt. She didn't want to do this any longer than she had to.

The shack is small, barely even a room, but it's better than sleeping out in the open—especially when 'out in the open' is located knee-deep in an alligator-infested swamp. While she's hunted their kind before, and happily so, she knows that she wouldn't stand a chance against five of them, and she's not interested in being tossed around realms a second time. No, she thinks, I'd rather swim in mud again. The trip, after all, is too fast for her physical body to comprehend, but her soul takes all of the pressure. Even now, she's aware of her tightening grasp around its pieces, fearful that any slack will cause them to eventually drift apart.

She'll have to be satisfied with what Kapalaran has given her.

Mayari inspects the cabin with a pensive expression on her face, questioning whether the establishment is still even structurally sound. The door creaks on its hinges, the corners are decorated with cobwebs, but there's a bed and a barrel of clean water inside, a cracked mirror hanging by a table and wall sconces burning low; it's good enough, she tells herself, certainly better than the cold patch of earth she'd slept in the night before.

She twists around and untangles the makeshift bag that she had been carrying with her, letting its contents scatter across the hardwood floor. The only thing clean is the alampay that she had woken up in, wrapped in plastic and glimmering, and she slips it between the mattress and its bedframe to keep it close but out of sight. The rest of her belongings, she places on the table: a black candlestick, a deck of tarot cards, and a wooden figurine of a woman holding a crescent-shaped moon, bare-bodied save for a shawl wrapped around her shoulders.

She's nudging them gently into place when she hears a tentative rasp on her door, followed by a curt voice. Mayari presses her lips together, unhinged at her presence, but she walks over anyway to part the rotting slab of wood and look at Vathmos with a curious but critical eye. "Why?" The painted dog cocks her head to one side, feigning confusion, heart hammering with barely-repressed irritability in her chest. "So you could force-feed me more pawfuls of mud? Or did you just want to rub it in?"

This wild dog was nothing to Vathmos, and didn't mean anything to her. She thought lowly of the species as a whole and that wild dogs didn't offer much meat. Mayari could have been just food to Vathmos, and, like Wormwood, it was going to take her time to see differently. Vathmos didn't have any problem being dirty- she was often covered in various states of mud and dried blood. It was a known fact that her home smell awful, as she kept two piles, one of bones and one of skins, haphardously ripped off her prey.

She takes a better look at the shack now, lip slightly upturned. It vanished as the wild dog opened the door, letting her peek inside. Vathmos huffed, akin to a sigh, and seemed to slouch, as if she were bored and wanted to do literally anything else right now. She wished she could just go hunting alone, like normal. The nagging instinct, however, to be around others was attentive and bugging her. Maybe it would be nice to have a hunting partner, but she would have wanted to hunt with literally anyone else. She gave a slight chortle as Mayari asked her about the mud. "No, dummy." She said, shaking her head at the dog.

"I've been ordered to take you out hunting with me. I'm supposed to show you where the better spots are. Do you want to come with me, or do you want to figure it out for yourself?" Vathmos, in a way, had created a shell around herself. It was an exoskeleton, radiating vehement malice and a tough exterior. The hyena did want to give the idea she had any sort of weakness or vunerablity. She just couldn't do that, weakness was worthy and demotion in her head, and Vathmos was strong. She was stronger than Wormwood, and she was definitely stronger than this stupid dog.

Maybe, they could find that out tonight. The idea tumbled around in her head.
