Caustic isn't stupid. He would never harm another here without reason. For his own persona and personal image, it was vital that Caustic keep his intimidating aura. He wants to be feared- he wants people to stay away from him, and his projects.

Letting people in was too risky- Tanglewood's population could not understand and it was not their business. This wasn't Alaric's business- either. Caustic elects for his normal method- truths between lies. "I'm going to eat it." The follow-up would about a when or why keep it alive then? So he answers, tipping his head, "Eventually... Test Subjects can offer many insights before their demise."

If Alaric was aware of the sadistic nature of Caustic's experiments, Alaric would undoubtedly disapprove. Despite what his apathetic personality might suggest, somewhere deep down he had an innate care for all things living. Even though the animals that Caustic experimented on were, by all regards, unintelligent, unremarkable creatures who served to reproduce and eventually become a link in the food chain. The rabbit in Caustic's satchel was no different.

The tabby did not find Caustic's answer to be satisfactory. It was much too vague for his liking, and the way that the larger male referred to the rabbit as a "test subject" put Alaric on edge. "What do you mean by 'test subject'?" inquired the feline after a moment in an attempt to pry into what exactly the wolf meant by his word choice.

Alaric would not appreciate the nihilism and pessimism with which Caustic viewed the world. The chemist's view of reality was twisted at best and horrifying at worst. Especially, as Caustic still clutched to his humanity, how he felt of the brainless lifeforms of prey animals.
They were meant to be used, just like every contender in the games. Every person was a test subject in the cold, calculating gaze of Caustic.
These thoughts go through his head, as he briefly stares at Alaric, then continues walking back to camp, stopping only to check if the tom was following. "I think you know exactly what I mean."
