Guide Archives / Guide how to play an intimidating character
« on: March 28, 2019, 02:11:29 PM »
Hello guys! I got bored so I decided on making a new guide for y'all because I see some people are having a tough time playing an intimidating character properly, so this is to help a little bit on those endeavors!

First things first: don't keep posting in all threads that your char is intimidating this, or intimidating that. (ex: "his intimidating gaze bore into her soul" or "his muscles rippled under his fur, making him look quite intimidating") This gets repetitive real fast and what I would consider lazy writing, not to mention people don't like being told how to feel about a certain character. Especially if the character is not actually intimidating. (and yes, I am guilty for writing like this too, sometimes. everyone makes mistakes like this, don't be hard on yourself if you find yourself writing like this! its a learning process) The "show, not tell" writing style is your friend when it comes to writing an intimidating character, and it actually works! Crazy, I know. It's a perfect way to make the reader actually feel intimidated if done right.

Here's the definition of the show, don't tell writing method:
"Show, don't tell is a technique used in various kinds of texts to allow the reader to experience the story through action, words, thoughts, senses, and feelings rather than through the author's exposition, summarization, and description."

This is telling:
"It was dark outside and the owls shrieked at shadowy figures. A cloaked man ran through the darkness."

This is showing:
"The cloaked man couldn't see well with how dark it was, knowing that it would only get darker as the winter solstice drew near and the days grew shorter. He picked up the pace as he saw figures moving around at the edge of his vision and winced as shrieking filled the air."

It takes a while to get used to the show, don't tell method, but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty useful and effective.

So that's it! I know this guide is pretty short, but I that's all I can think of atm. If anything else comes up, I will edit this post, and if you want me to add something, just shoot me a pm! I'll reply back as soon as possible. Thanks for taking the time to ride this, and have a good day!

Artist Loft / Contest bayonet on fire // DESIGN CONTEST, WIN 22000 GEMS + OTHER THINGS

Hullo! I decided to host an art design contest because I'm bored and I also want to give to the community some neat schtuff. This is the first time I've done this, so please be patient with me as I figure stuff out. I am also a big dumb bitch so I will probably get some things wrong, but this is a learning process!!
So first things first: this is an art contest. All you gotta do is know how to draw to enter! That being said, I WILL know if you're stealing. I always reverse image search stuff just to make sure, so if I know you're stealing art, I will report you to staff and disqualify you immediately. You can also enter as many times as you like, but you can only place once in the top three, so keep that in mind.
Now onto the prizes! (if you would like to donate something/offer help, my dms are open! you dont have to tho <3)

1st place winner gets 22000 gems, a large myth body, and art from @paroxysm and @HELLBENT
2nd place winner gets 12000 gems, two pieces of art (half body and headshot) from me, and a hybrid item.
And 3rd place winner gets 10000 gems, and once piece of art (headshot) from me.

The theme is colorful macabre and cryptid. You can draw anything from animals, humans, humanoids, and of course, monsters.
Here are some mood boards to get you started, but you don't have to follow them, of course!:

i wanna host a design contest, but i want everyone to know that signs up that they'll get something in return. unlike traditional contests, you don't just enter and hope you win the grand prize and walk away with nothing if you don't. I want to give gems to the people that enter as a sign of gratitude for participating! i need to earn more gems first, but that's the plan
i also dont know what the grand prize should be, but i do know gems will be added to whatever it is. im thinking 20000 gems would be enough, but if you guys think raising it would be better, im all ears! i might also add art to the prizes, but im still brainstorming for the most part and would appreciate feedback! thank you for reading this c:::
